Strut mount bolts torque specs

hey guys

My Haynes manual says "190" for the torque specs for the "strut to knuckle" torque specs.

I can't imagine this being foot pounds.

Anybody know the foot pounds for the two mounting bolts for each strut?

Re: Strut mount bolts torque specs

One manual had 155 ft-lbs, which is easy enough for me to torque by placing my 155 lbs on the end of a wrench parallel to the ground 1 foot away from the nut to be tightened. 1 foot x 155lb = 155 ft-lbs.

If I wanted to go to 190 ft-lbs I would step on the wrench 1.23 feet from the nut (155lb x 1.23 ft = 190 ft-lbs). The wrench would have to be normal to the direction of the gravitational force otherwise you'll have to cypher with sin/cos or just use my favorite, the cross product.

I set the wrench on the highest setting then torqued until I could torque no more. I am guessing it was set at 170 ft lbs, since my wrench's markings stop at 150, and you can turn the handle a bit past that, which is what I did.

I never did get it to "click" but I know the bolts are now torqued to at least 160 ft lbs.

I mean....they aint going anywhere...that's for sure

Re: Strut mount bolts torque specs

The later years the bolts are torque-to-yield and are to be replaced after being removed. Example for a '92 is: torque to 125 ft/lb, torque an additional 120*, final torque must exceed 148 ft/lb. This spec is turning the nut while the bolt is being held stationary.

I used the old bolts and torqued them well past 160 foot pounds

Re: Strut mount bolts torque specs

You can remove and replace the strut mount without even jacking the vehicle up. Leave the vehicle resting on the suspension and unbolt the strut bolt and three mounting bolts. All you have to compress on re-install is the strut.
