Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

It sounds like the camber plate might be all the way back on the passenger side. There are slots under the camber plate to adjust caster. My suggestion would be to jack and support the frontend, then remove the front tires and meassure the distance from the spindle to the front or back of the fender well. Check the camber plates to see if the right side has moved back. Both sides generally should be relatively the same distance with minor variances in measurement on top of the fender well. Check the cross member to see if it has been pushed back on the right side and any other damage to the subframe or even the a-arm that could cause the spindle location to be pushed back. The only way to find out is to look.

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

I doubt that it's the caster/camber plate (actually adjustable upper strut mount. Moved across it's full range of motion there should be barely any changed in location of the tire at ride height.

Easiest way, take it to a body shop with a frame machine and have them tell you what's wrong, they can probably pull it straight while they have it on the machine, or tell you what parts will need to be replaced.

To figure out what is moved on your own drop a plumb bob centered on the same location at every wheel with the wheels facing straight forward and then measure the distance front to back. this will tell you if the tire/wheel/suspension is in the wrong place or if the body work is. Factory tolerances are fairly high, something like 3/16" -1/4" for that measurement, so don't be surprised when it's a little off (I had an 83TA that was originally at the outside of the factory range and then got t-boned and everything ended up dead nuts on, oh well).

From there, if the wheel location is actually off then start doing the same measurement to the different suspension pick up points (balljoints, control arm pivots...) and diagonal measurements to verify that even if the lengths from front to back are right that the car is square.

It might help to find a copy of the factory body dimensions drawing to get actual numbers what it's supposed to be from point to point. If you can't find one I think I have it for an '83 which should be similar except for the suspension pick up point heights (the ride height changed from year to year and model to model). I'd have to do some digging, it's part of the FSM

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

Yeah I will jack it up on my next day off, post pics of what I find. If we cant figure anything out then I will take it to a body shop.

What are the best and worst case scenarios I can expect?

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

it could be the strut mount, or a bent strut (unlikely) or possible the rear mount for the front control arm is damaged/broken from the frame. Its common, and that wheels is waaay of where it should be. Jack the car up, pull the wheel off and see what happening.

take a pic of the strut tower, wheel well with the wheel off, and the underside of the frame where the control arm mounts. Maybe the people here can find something for you in investigate.

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

I need to find a good bodyshop nearby. I was planning on renewing the suspension next. What are some good aftermarket suppliers?

Hopefully its just the A arm, It would suck to pay for a new k member or have the frame straightened.

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

Alright I just put it on ramps and crawled under. I could not find any real serious damage except the aforementioned.

I straightened both wheels and measured from the center dust cap to both sides of the wheel well. On the left side I got around 16" to both sides. On the right side I got 15" to the back of the car and 17" to the front.

Another thing I noticed is that the wheels both point in different directions to a degree. If you where looking at the car from an aerial view the front tires would look like \\ //.

It looks like the right side of the k member and the part that holds the spring looks like its pushed a little back. I couldnt find any other obvious damage to the frame or suspension.

Here is the damage I spoke of before.

Here are the parts I think are pushed of a little bit.

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

I don't see anything that sticks out, would have to see it myself.
It looks like your swaybar endlinks are junk and you still have your org idler arm. They don't have anything to do with the prob buut replace them.
If the car got hit straight on one frame rail, it may be pushed back towards the firewall.

Re: Right tire off center and rubs wheels well.

It appears that the car was orginally red. Post #10 first picture, is this the front frame horn? This car has been in a collision, bent up, and not repaired correctly. It is time for a frame machine/ pull.

Yes I have a thread on how I painted it flat black for $54 . As for the picture, unfortunately it is the frame horn on the right side

I dont think an attempt to fix it was made at all. My friends father-in-law has a body shop in town. Im gonna go by for an estimant on my day off. In the worst case scenario I will just buy a roller and swap the drive train in.
