Loud noise when switching gears

Hey guys! Tonight when I was leaving work, I hit a pot hole or bump and heard a loud noise near the back of my 91 camaro (I think it was near the back not sure).

Then I started hearing a loud klunk everytime I switched gears after that. The noise is very little if at all if I switch gears at low r.p.m's. Though at high r.p.ms I hear it loudly. I also hear it when I go over speed bumps.

I have a 350 5 speed. I know they do not have transmission mounts afaik, so question is where and what is broke. I looked under it tonight but did not see anything hanging down at all. I am assuming I need to get it in the air to see whatever is broke.

Any tips or advice on replacing whatever may be the problem would be appreciated! Thanks

Edit - This might need to be switched to the drivetrain forum... sorry!

Re: Loud noise when switching gears

Yes a 5-speed has a trans mount; same part # as an automatic. Identical in every way.

It's probably broke. Check it by replacement, if it's not broke now, it's at least halfway to it and will be soon, anyway. I'd suggest a poly replacement such as Energy Suspension or Prothane.

Re: Loud noise when switching gears

Thanks for the replies... but I do not think it is the trans mount now. I was under the car this afternoon (in the rain) and when I looked at the back of the trans where the driveshaft meets it, there was a rubber and metal (bushing?) that was hanging loose.

There is a black bar that runs along the drivers side of the driveshaft (torque shaft?) that is loose because a bolt that runs through it, the bushing, and into the rear of the transmission, is missing lol.

So at the rear of the trans and start of the driveshaft, I have a loose bushing and loose torque bar (I think those are the names). I found the bolt at a local dealer, but it seems odd that this bar and busing would cause the loud noise I hear when I shift under high r.p.ms.

Any tips or advice anyone could lend would be awesome! Thanks

Re: Loud noise when switching gears

That long "bar" (its name is "torque arm") is what holds the rear from rotating when power is applied. So it being loose will DEFINITELY make banging noises and other malfunctions.

Put it all back together and see if it's any better.
