Independent Rear Suspension?

I'm wanting to get independent rear suspension. Will a C4 or a C5 rear axle swap over to the third gen, if so, what all would i need for this swap.

Thanks, Ryan.

Re: Independent Rear Suspension?

The easiest way to have a C4/C5 IRS is to buy a running C4/C5 and just drive that.

Re: Independent Rear Suspension?

Yeah, 1meanz's build was a piece of cake..... NO??
Never thought I'd see something more involved, but the 3rd gen/ZO6 is.
Crazy, and talented- both of them.

IRS?? Go with a Watts or love what you got; that's my approach ;-)

Just to be clear that guy is using the front suspension from the Z06, the rear is remaining a torque arm/live axle setup.

This guy is trying to put the transaxle and rear suspension from a c5, along with an LS1, in to his third gen.

There was a GM test mule, a TA called Firefox, that had a C4 IRS installed. GM did it during development of the 4th gen. There is a link to pix and an article of the car in my build thread, but there are no pix of how GM installed the rear.

Re: Independent Rear Suspension?

After looking through the pictures and reading all of the captions in that IRS install, it honestly doesn't look like it's worth it at all. I'd love to go GM IRS instead of trying to stuff a ford 9" in my car, but not at that expense. Without the expert skill of that fabricator, and the knowledge of suspension fabrication and angles an average mechanic would just end up destroying that car. Honestly I feel like they weren't far from it, and they finished successfully.

Long story short-stick do your solid rear or get a vette.
