Welding subframes...remove carpet?

Welding subframes...remove carpet?

My Spohn subframes and relocation brackets are on there way, so I'm trying to setup installation. The guy I talked to was concerned about my carpet getting to hot and possible fire. He wants me to pull it out or he'll just fill the floor with water and wet vac it out. Has anyone had a problem with heating the carpet too much? This guy is used to welding in subs and roll bars on stripped down cars. He's using a Mig welder.

I have done a little mig welding and would suggest that you do pull your carpet back. There is a chance of it catching fire or even better burning a hole through it. I plan on installing the same Spohn products myself and plan on pulling the carpet back.

If you take the seats out and remove the lower molding you'll be able to slide a 2x4 or something under the carpet to keep it from burning.

It's only four nuts holding each of the front seats in place. Not much involved to remove them.
Then remove the door threshold strip and lift the carpet a little and ou are safe.
That's a heck of a lot easier than flooding the car.

Yeah, take the passenger seat and all the trim out before you take the car in, then they'll just have to pull the driver's seat and lower seat belt reel out.

Didn't someone the designs the suspension parts like SFCs say that if the carpet didn't get very hot then the quality of the welds were not very good?

My Spohn SFC's were welded in without touching the interior.

The guy who welded them in is still pissed at me. My 86 was cleaner than his 88 underneath.

Never seen salt, never have rust! Just need to get rid for the 15 yr old FACTORY installed exhaust.

Yet it has 110,000 miles on it.

i just welded in global west sfc's... pulled the carpet back a little up front in pass and driver's side... same in back... and wedged some wood in there... not sure this was even necessary... good welder takes his time, is quick at the actual weld, tacks and moves on if necessary...

no problems.

It's a good idea to lift up the carpet.I just welded my Spohn subframes in with a mig welder and I did remove the seats and hold up the carpet with wood, you can tell the metal gets VERY hot in spots inside the car, it burned off the paint so I wire brushed the spots and repainted them.
