255/40/17 front 275/40/17 rear?

255/40/17 front 275/40/17 rear?
Will those fit on 17x8 rims? I was thinking about getting those rims instead of the TT2's that everyone has. I am currently using stock 16x8 IROC rims with 225/60/16's on them. One thing I also wanted to know is would 255/45/17's front and 255/45/17's back fit? Reason being because I have a 4" exhaust all the way back from the long tube headers so ground clearance is still a major problem even though I have brand new (3 weeks old) IROC-Z spring and KYB Shocks and struts. So I don't want my new wheels and tires to make my car lower (or at least not that much lower because every 1/2 inch counts). Thanx

Go to BFGs web site and you can get an application chart that will tell you what tires fit what rims. Without looking, I'll tell you that the 275 is too large for an 8" rim.

Like I said, go to http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com and look at the tire application charts for the tire you want and look at the design rim widths. Rule of thumb is that for good cornering performance you want to have a rim mid range to top range of the recommended rim size and for drag racing you want a rim low range to mid range of the recommended rim size.
I'm more interested in straight line so I'm using 17x9 rims with 5" backspacing all the way around with a 245/45-R17 on the front for good clearance and 275/40-R17 drag radials on the back. I would have gone 9.5 wide rim with 5.5 backspacing but they didn't make it that big in my rim design.

If you are looking for clearance go with 255/45/17 in the front and 285/40/17 in the rear. They are taller than the other combos.315's have the same diameter as 275's, and 255/40's will be way to low.I think they (255/40's) are around 26 inches in diameter with stock (245/5016) being around 26.7-26.6 in diameter.

A 255/40/r17 is 25.03" in diameter.
A 255/45/r17 is 26.03" in diameter.
A 275/40/r17 is 25.66" in diameter.
A 315/35/r17 is 25.68" in diameter.
Hope this helps.

So if I get some rims that are wide enough for 315's like say 17x11 or so that would fit the tire fine but would it fit on the back of my IROC? What would I have to do to my wheel well to get 315's to fit?

I think that 315's might hit the shock. Better check the back spacing on that wheel.

A 17x9 with a 5-inch backspacing puts the wheel out as far as reasonable. Any extra width has to go towards the inside of the car which means you add the width to your backspacing. So if you want another inch you would get 17x10 with a 6-inch backspacing. 17x11 would have a 7-inch backspacing. Will it fit? You'll just have to measure it up.
