Need new Tires, what do you recommend?

Here are the basics:

- P245/50VR-16
- I live in S. FL - it's wet 5 months and dry the other 7
- daily driven, with an occational street race or 2
- I need something that can handle fast corners.
- I dont want to spend a fortune

Thanks,

Jacob

I think that it was in motor trend, but there was an article that put the Goodyear Eagle GSCs against the Pep Boy's Futura Ultra-Zs. And they said that the Furturas equalled the GSCs except in wet handling. The Futuas out handled the GSCs. They said they were the best bet. Think of it, they are the same in every way, but they cost half as much.

I think I may try a set of the Ultra Z tires next on my formula due to the positive posts on them. I have firestone firehawk sz50s on my IROC, very good, a little high $$$, maybe worth it for the rain however.

I too have the Ultra Z's and they are great. I have the 255/50/16's and they have a tread width of most 275's. Many great comments on them from friends for looks too. Excellant dry traction, I havn't had a chance to try wet traction.

YOU WANT Dunlop Sports 9000's...Z rated, ultra high performance, will blow anything away in the rain, and 99% of all other tires in the dry, road or track.
I may be a little biasd because I've got them, but I did a TON of reasearch before I picked out my tires.
Price wasn't a concern for me, just strict performance, but I was able to pick mine up for $172 a piece. Not exacitly cheap, but cost less than every other Ultra High performance tire it was compared to, and rated above. They have good tread life too.
If you want something more economical, I'd say go for the Ultra Z's, people seem to like them. But if you've got the extra cash to spend, the Dunlop's are where it's at. More money but a much better tire.

The RE71's have been replaced by the RE730's, but you might still be able to find the RE71's at www.tirerack.com or at your local store.

You may want to check out Kuhmo ECSTA Supra 712's. I have them on the front of my car, and I plan on getting them for thre rear soon. They handle very well in the rain and give good traction when dry. They are very cheap too.

Bridgestone RE730, I bought these tires last year. They have very good performance at a reasonable price.

Wet traction is reaaly good. You might consider these tires for Florida.

My vote also goes for the Kumhos. Cheap as heck and an aggressive pattern too.

I have the Kuhmo ESCTA's also and love the hell out of them.... I got them for a steal with lifetime warranty, lifetime mounting and balancing, new stems & all for $388 because I did some computer repair for the manager of the store, I called later on as a nobody and read off my reciept everything that I got and they quoted me $684, so I felt REAL good when I got off the phone....

Check out Sumitomo HTRZ tires from Tire Rack. Z rated with tread design similar to the old Gatorback and a good looking sidewall. Tires, shipping, mounting and balancing with an alignment for just under $500.

I had the SP8000's but the wore to fast for me. So I went to the RE730's. To me they handle and grip better in all weather and the do not wear as much as the Dunlops.

BTW go to any local tire dealer and tell them what you can get the tires for on TireRack and they will match the price including mount and balance, that you would pay with shipping from tirerack. The advantage is you have a local person to deal with if you have any problems. I have done this 4 times now.
