Spend the $400 to get the Bilsteins from Shox.com. Konis are adjustable and more money. KYBs are less money but not as good. The Bilsteins are good enough to occasionally road race with and give a good ride on the street.

I'll take a spin in the opposite direction:
If you have the original shocks/struts on the car, then new units of any brand will improve your ride dramatically. I put Monroe Sensatrac struts on the front of my car in 1996, and they made one hell of a difference compared to the original '86 units.
I'd say unless you have $400 in your pocket that you don't want to spend on anything else, then get the KYB's. http://www.summitracing.com has 'em at a good price. You can do the shocks yourself, but you might want to have a shop do the struts, since the car will need a front alignment right away.

Well, I had the stock struts/shocks, got the KYBs ($150 from Summit), then finally got the Bilsteins ($377 from VetteBrakes and carparts.com). If you want a good replacement strut, get the KYBs. If you want a stiff strut, get the Bilsteins. KYB only offers the GR2 strut which is a low pressure gas strut. The Bilsteins are high pressure and made in Germany
