Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

I want to put some serious hp in my car but it has t-tops so I've got alot of flex to kill. Do you think these are fine or are there better ones out there? I just want to do it right the first time. Apparently these below are designed for t-top models.

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

I got mine from UMI. I picked them because they bolt on in the rear and strengthen the trailing arm brackets. They made a big difference in the stiffness of the car. Mine will remain stock HP give or take a lil' bit but they're built strong and can probably handle much more HP. I'd recommend the UMI product to anybody.

Why not put roll bars or cages?

Ha there is a messy idea. I'm not ready to knock holes in my car to put those rods through. Also that would place a huge bar in my t-top area that would kinda ruin the feel of slipping in the car easily. I like the idea of SFC's cause I dont have to look at them. As long as they will keep the car tight for max hp.

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

Does anyone know how much hp is safe to put in a T-top car without taking that roll cage step? Just sticking to under carriage work?

Hello
Great to hear that you are satisfied with the product! Thanks again for the business.

Hello
Its not the HP level its what times you are running at the track. I believe that the NHRA and IHRA regulations are anything below a 11.99. It just depends on tech. But like mentioned above UMI Performance does offer a SFC for T tops. Below is a link to show you and tell you about the product.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I will be more than glad to help.
Thanks
Brad

what kind of numbers are you realistically looking at? not imaginary, serious numbers.

what are you doing with the car? drag, auto-x, just street? a 6pt cage will add some rigidity and not interfere with the tops at all, but they can make getting in and out of the car a pain, unless they are custom bent

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

SFC are a requirement for all third gens no matter what the power level. The SFC tie what's considered the front and rear sub frames together. A roll bar/cage is designed for driver protection and doesn't tie the sub frames together the same way SFC do.

I had custom made SFC installed in my car within the first couple of weeks of owning it. A year later I installed a 6 point roll bar because the second year of racing, I ran 12.0 on the opening day and at the time 11.99 and quicker required a roll bar. My car now has a full cage and still has the original SFC I installed years ago. I've never had a problem with my T-tops. There isn't a lot of inner structure to my car any more.

NHRA/IHRA state the a roll bar is now required at 11.49. Convertibles is 13.99 and quicker. A T-top car is considered a hardtop. The rules say a minimum 5 point roll bar is required but everyone adds the passenger side door bar to make a 6 point.

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

Personally, I think 2 sets of SFC just adds extra weight. You just need to join the front and rear subframes to add rigidity to the body. There's nothing but sheetmetal between the front and rear subframes and the floor can twist and bend. A simple SFC joining the 2 together keeps the body from flexing.

My SFC are custom made and are simple thin walled square tubing. I can't remember if they're 1-1/2" or 2" square but they're only thin walled. Something like 1/8". My SFC run under the floor joining directly to the subframes. The driver's side SFC runs directly under my seat and I welded some angle iron to both sides of the SFC to attach my seat to the "frame" instead of just to sheetmetal.

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

ok thanks man..... i love your setup stephen.. that engine is insane... i didnt think 2 sfcs would really benefit me on the street.... if you got one and are running with that huge engine then the bmr sfc is more than enough for me... thanks man...

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

Awesome replies and info on the sfc's. For now I'm just going for a good street rod. I didnt want to cheap out on some sfc's that I'd be disappointed with later in time but seeing what you guys are running with sfc's still holding strong gives me confidence that I dont have to much to worry about. I'll probably end up picking up some umi's and have a shop weld them in. I dont trust my welding skills that much yet lol. Thanks for all the info!

Re: Sub Frame Connecters for T-Tops

Lets look into a group purchase for some UMI SFCs. I know I would be down for getting some pretty soon. I wonder if UMI would give us a price on something like this.
