Custom front subframe brace

I just happen to run across a picture of this in Camaro Performers, Jun 09, pg 9:

Anyone have anything like this or seen anyone manufacture one? I have never seen a brace like this for our cars. I think bmr makes a similar (?) front end "k-member" brace for mustangs.

Re: Custom front subframe brace

its a nice peice. looks like a new style of Sub frame connector and its a custom tranny crossmember built in. u can see how it attached as 3 points, front subframe, tranny crossmember bolts and runs back to the rear subframe. the cross point infront of the trans is a nice touch or added rigidy and it unbolts for easy removal. still its a tight fit around the trans so the entire SFC would have to be unbolted to remove the engine and trans.

its def custom, nice work tho

Re: Custom front subframe brace

Its a lateral brace designed for spanning the rear A-arm ears from closing together under subframe flex exerted from the a-arms in hard cornering.

Its alot like the brace I had on my car, only much heavier and incubersome to work around. It is in fact designed to try and be an entire subframe connector unit all in one. This brace however runs up the sides of the trans right under the already strong front unibody structure for and aft. only the lateral (side to side) brace is needed...... overkill and excessive weight in my opinion.

i have old pics of it on my old cardomain site. You will have to click on the link and page down 5 pictures. Its an aluminum peice spanning the frame rails just in front of the trans pan. I welded attachment tabs to the subframes on each site so I could unbolt it and I used an aluminum tierod with rodends so I could adjust the length as well as preload it.

Re: Custom front subframe brace

Dean, I remember seeing that brace on your car in the past. Didnt you used to be "vsixtoy" on here?

How did that brace work out for you btw?

There is another picture in the article of the rearward portion of the bracing. I'll post it when I get home today.

Evidently, all the work was done in British Columbia.

Agood2.8, RTFC, Vsixtoy, Afrikingoodtime,.......all kinds of names. An old moderator had it in for me and kept banning me years ago.

The brace work great. Ny car as you probably remember had no weak links ibn the suspension....meaning that flex or failure would not transfer into multiple worn bushings where this would go unnoticed otherwise. I could feel the removal of any one of my 4 front lateral braces. They all helped in steering response and perciseness in controling the vehicle.

Re: Custom front subframe brace

I remember you kept getting banned for being too argumentative or something

As a convertible owner I am always looking for ways to tighten up the chassis (see my sig);

I am still contemplating a custom cross-brace (x-shaped) to connect the mid chassis area to the end of the front subframes. The 1st gen verts had one, as well as the 4th gen. I know there are some differences in the chassis structure from year to year, but the concept still seems pretty solid.

I have mac sfc's and they helped alot but I still feel more twist/flex than i am happy with at times. I could just rip em out and try the spohn set.....but I'm not sure. I keep going back to the though "well they had x-braces on 1st and 4th gen verts. Why cant I make one for myself?"
