Re: remove bushings

Not sure about panhard rod, but control arms must be pressed.

Re: remove bushings

Well you can freeze them out with oxygen and shatter them, Or burn them out with a torch and clean it up later.

Pay someone to press them out and press in new ones, its worth every penny.

Re: remove bushings

You could make some kind of press with a bottle jack... or just use a hammer.
I wouldn't burn them out, that doesn't sound like a good idea.

You've been ripped off if you payed someone to press bushings in or out for you, there are so many people that'll do it for free.

Re: remove bushings

I don't know anyone from here, so i payed the machine shop to do it, 100$ for ball joints and new bushing for the a-arms they even stripped all the old paint/gunk/greese off, they were ready for some paint when i got them.

They have presses you can rent, but the luck of that actually working them in straight are slim.

Re: remove bushings

$100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Installing the bushings correctly yourself is easy, getting the old ones out is a little more difficult (the rubber just absorbs any impact), when you don't have access to a press.

My brother (with a fox 'stang), payed les schwab $150 to do all the work, dis-assembly of suspension, removal of old bushings, installation of new, re-assembly--- EVERYTHING! That even included an alignment!

Re: remove bushings

last time I replaced bushings was on my 78 monza and I couldn't get the ones out of the a arm without damaging the arm. I took them to a shop and they charged me $20 to remove them all so I don't think I got ripped off. Some people have used liquid oxygen to freeze the rubbed and shatter them out then cut out the casing.

Re: remove bushings

This is what I did with the rear control arms I took them off car then used a drill with a bigger size drill bit. I drilled 4-7 holes in the bushing at least one hole was drilled through the bushing up next to the metal casing then took out the metal insert in the middle of bushing.
I took my drill and inserted the bit in the hole that is up against the metal bushing case and started the drill using little pressure the drill bit will spin on the outside of the rubber bushing.
doing this the bit just walked the rubber right out this was the easy part. To remove the metal bushing casing I drilled a bunch of holes in it and used a punch and got the bushing to cave in and then I beat the hell out of it with a hammer and chisel.

Once I got it out I beat the new one in with a hammer

This may not be better than pressing them in with a press but it worked for me. I have a limited supply of tools so I improvised

Re: remove bushings

The trick is... you need to put a spacer next to the bushing, between the two sides of the C-shaped trailing arm/control arm/panhard rod. Then it won't compress the piece and damage it, and the bushing casing will come out easier, because when you start to bend the control arm it grabs the bushing casing tighter.

Re: remove bushings

Head down to Autozone and rent (free) a ball joint press, big heavy duty c-clamp deal. Be sure to wedge a piece of wood or steel between the U shape part of the arm so it won't collapse and dig into the bushing sleeve.
