preventing squatting?!

Hey guys,

Just got Eibach sportlines on my '85. Looks & feels aggressive! I feel like it needs to be reinforced more though..

I am looking into getting an Edelbrock front strut tower bar. Is that the only one I will need, is there others?

Squatting: when i'm taking off from a light, i hear a slight 'thud'.. I'm thinking it may be the wheel tapping the wheel wells.. right? what can i do, or what to get, that will prevent this? minimal squatting pretty much

thanks guys!

Re: preventing squatting?!

the thud is prob your trans mount broken and maybe your tq arm mount also, i recomend energy bushing on each

i welded solid plate on my tq arm and put UMI LCA's and panhard all that helped alot to, it just plants and goes

im friends old step dad said "your gonna make that car squat" to him about his cutlass.....my friend was like WTF and the old man got mad and said "its going to squat on you if you keep driving the heck out of it"

im not quite sure on what you mean on your squat comment, i think your talking about the rear end going down but thats good to plant the tires down

Re: preventing squatting?!

The "thud" on acceleration is likley the trans mount. Very comon on these cars, due to the tq arm being attached to the transmission.

As for rear-end "squat" on acceleration, that's the opposite of what you want to happen, but is very comon in lowered cars. You actually want the rear end to push away from the car during launch to plant/hold the tires. - I would highly reccomend lower control arm relocation brackets(lcarb's).

mine only lifts when i load it, like doing a brake stand or holding the brake and giving it some gas prior to launch, once it launches it plants the *** down with minimal wheel spin, before my chassis mods all it would do is burn out off the line......i dont see how you can get the body to move up as you are launching

The further you move the instant center up(via lowering the control arm from the axle) the harder it will push away from the car when shocked/loaded from the pinion. It's comonly refered to as anti-squat. - This "theory" is how all drag race suspensions work. You need anti-squat to hook the tires, but you want to use as little as possible so that more energy is transfered into moving the car forward instead of up.

Re: preventing squatting?!

Yeah, go watch some drag videos. I cant find the one I want.

But, its a c5 vette that when he takes off the whole body of the car raises while the tires stay planted, no wheelie, no squatting. Just launches and goes.

Ill try to find a video best showing it.

Re: preventing squatting?!

Not all cars/suspensions lift the rear of the body to indicate anti-squat. Simply maintaining wheel well height is a pretty good sign when you consider the amount of weight being transfered to the back. The springs by themselves would compress and allow the car to squat.
