rear tires rub in dips

I have 255/50/17 tires in the back of my 84 z28. now when I go through a big dip or bump (like on the interstate going over bridges) my tires are just hitting the inside lip of the fender well and cutting grooves in the tires. Is there a way to limit the travel of the rear suspension easily? What about air bags inside the coil springs? or, some of those spacers that go in between the coil springs, or, use a peice of jounce spacer that goes over the shock and trim it to the proper height? I like the air bags, as they will be useful when going to the track, but does it raise up the back of the car a lot at like 5-7 psi? would that even be enough psi to help the tire situation anyway? thanks for any help!

Re: rear tires rub in dips

I had the same prob. with my 92' RS. I run Hotchkis sport springs. stock ride height. I just took a body hammer and tapped the lip in until it was at about a 45 degree angle. it hasn't rubbed since.

Re: rear tires rub in dips

I got the same exact rear tires as you do man, I haven't had troubles with mine bottoming out on me, but I installed drag bags (air bags, same thing, the air bags that go in the springs.) Its pretty easy to install them, the ones I got maxes out like 35 psi. I kinda notice it raised by a inch or two, but wasn't too impress, other than it gets stiff in the rear and going over bumps feels kinda stiff, but I like it, so it doesn't bother me.

apparently air bags are good for the track, but I wouldn't know, but I do know some people use them when they take off. I'm not too sure, but maybe your car will raise up more than mine did, my shocks are still pretty good shape so mine only raise like another inch or two, yours might raise more than it is now. but it doesn't take much to hit 25 lbs of pressure fast.

so I say air bags would be the way to go to make the rear stiffer with out going for air shocks.

hopes that helps you out, because it works great for me.

Tim

Re: rear tires rub in dips

I have been thinknig of getting some drag bags. I think it might be the best solution. I just don't want the car to raise up too much in the rear though. just need to keep those tires from hitting the lip in the fender well. I went on power tour this last summer and with all my stuff in the trunk and a couple other people in the car the tire got a big gouge taken out of it on the interstate when I went over a bridge and the car about bottomed out. with just me in the car it hasn't hit yet, but man it makes me really really nervous every time i come up to an intersection and it dips or is rough and i'm going fsst to keep up with traffic. I'm afraid that one of these times it will cut the sidewall and tire will go flat!

Re: rear tires rub in dips

Well if you do hammer the fender lip, it won't hurt it at all. you can't even tell that it has been done. like I said, I hammered mine up to about a 45* angle and it hasn't rubbed since.
