Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Well, I was able to replace the inner wheel bearing, but not the outer bearing (1990 IROC). The outer wheel bearing wouldn't seat all the way for me to get the washer, nut, and cotter pin back in. Well, I can't get the old outer bearing "housing" off the rotor and therefore the new bearing won't seat. I have the new "housing" that came with the new bearing but how the heck can I get the old "housing" out??????

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Are you talking about the race?
(Thing on the left)
If so, I have the best luck by flipping the rotor so the lug studs point down. Then grabbing a punch or even a flat head screw driver if you're in a pinch. If you clean some of the grease out and shine a light down there you'll see the race actually sticks out from the hub (what the race sits in) and there will be a small ledge that you can place the punch on and smack the punch with a hammer. Rotate ~120* and repeat. Keep doing so until the race has popped all the way out.
Good luck.

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Make sure after you seat the second race that the first one hasn't wiggled out a bit. This happened on mine and I had to re-seat the first one.

A brass drift ( punch ) is the best tool for the job , it's softer than the race so you wont have to worry about chipping or deformation , I purchased my last one at harbor freight and altho it was somewhat expensive It does the job flawlessly every time .

While this is a nice tidbit; do you save the race you knock out for some other use?
On installation I use the old race against the new race so I can make sure (as best I can visually) that it is going in level.

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Well, the new race is a little too big to fit in the hub...I read that sometimes they need to be shaved a bit. Now deciding on having the shaved or just getting new rotors since these are a little worn.

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Shaved ??? What ??? No No No They should fit right out of the box , if the race has spun inside the hub sometimes you can knurl (?) the walls and it will hold but I've never heard of shaving anything with a new bearing and race .
I think they sold you something wrong , I would go back and find another salesman ( the oldest guy behind the counter ) and have him look it up again .
I never throw away the old bearings or the races , they come in real handy if you have a press

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Ok, I do know that the rotor/hub is 8+ years old with 20,000 miles on it. I'm gonna look at it some more tomorrow.

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Do you have the correct bearing/race for your set-up?

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
This helps a little, I guess I'll see if the bearings are "Set 34" since I don't have the 1LE package. Don't know how to tell if they are though.

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
I'll compare the old and new tomorrow; I remember the new being something like M1260 or something like that. So if they don't match up need to get the new bearings/race that match the old numbers?

Re: Wheel Bearing Housing Question
Well, got the bearings replaced out tonight. O'Reilly's gave me the wrong bearing/housing the other day and so I called CarQuest. Well, not only did they charge $15 for 1 bearing, they delivered the wrong bearing. So they had to go back and get the right one; this only took 45 min.
Good NEWS: I'm not hearing that grinding sound nearly as bad.
BAD NEWS: But on the SHARP turns where the wheel's all the way to the right, it'll grind.
Guess it on to look at the joints unless someone can offer a better search.
