what is the biggest 16" tire I can fit on my car?

I have an 85 z-28 lowered 2" currently on 16" 25th anniversary wheels w/ 245/50/16 tires. i am looking for a drag radial but I don't want the 255/50/16 size tire. I want something a little taller. I looked at the 295/50/16 but I think they are going to rub because they will be too wide. I already rolled the wheel well lip in the back so I could fit a big tire. I had 275/6015's on the back and they just fit but they looked good. Are there any other 16" drag radial out there that is taller than a 255/50/16 and narrower than a 295/50/16?

The reason for the taller tire is to drop the cruising RPM when I am driving on the highway. I have 3.73's w/ a 5 spd. It still revs a little high for me even with the overdrive gear.

Just for reference, the likely reason you're not getting much response to this question is that it is asked almost daily. A quick search will answer many comon questions.

The first number of a tire's size is its width in millimeters. The second number is the aspect ratio, height as a percentage of the width vs wheel size. Basically saying a 295/50 is only marginally taller than a 255/50, but is 40mm wider. That said, they are not reccomended for less than a 9" wide wheel for a reason.

For Dr's there are no other sizes available between the two. For regualr radials, BFG atleast used-to make a 265/50/16, but IIRC it was in a Radial T?A, thus even with the added width it won't hook as well as a decent 255/50. - I don't believe you'll find anything in 60 series or taller for a 16" rim other than truck/suv oriented tires which will be very tall(likely 65 series or taller), thus again will not fit correctly.

If you are turning too many rpm in OD with 3.73 gears then you are under-cammed for that gear ratio.

Actually, the BFG 295/50R16s are recommended for a 8"-10" wheel, which puts the stock wheels within manufacturers specs.

I've run the BFG 295/50s on my 92 years ago, with ZERO ruing or mods to make them fit. And yes, my car was lowered too and I never had any rubbing issues

^ That said a decent 255 drag radial will hook better than a 295 Radial T/A.
