Terrible vibrating from front end

Just like the title says, the front wheels start to shake violently but only when im going 40-45 mph. If I go any faster or slower it stops?? I know it's the wheels shaking because a friend of mine was riding in his car and could see them shaking, and the steering wheel shakes violently while it's happening.

I lowered the car on intrax (2") springs a couple hundred miles before this started but I'm not sure if or how that could have caused this.

What should I begin looking for?

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

Have you taken it to an alignment shop or had the wheels checked (bent rims)?

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

Well if possible I would like to get some input and ideas before I go to a shop and they try to sell me things I don't need. I've never had this problem before with these wheels and I haven't ran over anything or hit anything that would bend the wheels..

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

Did you have an alignment after swapping in the springs?

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

Yes. It needs to be aligned after spring swap. You CAN tell the alignment shop to let you know before they do any other work-if they find anything else wrong. Then you can decide whether or not to have them do the extra work if required.

Probably wouldn't hurt to check your wheel bearings before taking it in. Just jack each tire up and grab each tire at 12 and 6 o'clock. Any in-out play would indicate the bearings need to be replaced or serviced.

Most likely out of align and loose idler arm.
But yes, all the shops around here don't want to do an alignment unless you buy a ton of parts.

I know it's a tough job, but they will tell you, you need new parts when you don't because they don't like to work hard without big bucks.

also, make sure your tie rods ans ball joints are in good shape too- it'll cause the same problem.

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

Shops will usually check the front end before an alignment (which is needed after the springs), the alignment itself won't cure a vibration though. Could be improperly balanced tires if the front end is good.

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

hello. im having the same issue with my 87 firebird. i was driving on the interstate and when i was going uphill around 65 mph the front end would shake really terribly. I made it to my destination without any problem and it only has that shaking at that speed. im a little worried to drive it back home tomorrow ( from richmond to virginia beach) about 100 miles because of that shaking. do you guys think it will be okay to drive home?

Welcome to TGO. Wouldn't hurt to take it by a shop and have an inspection done, make sure there's nothing seriously loose underneath.

Re: Terrible vibrating from front end

First thing is to get it up where you can see the front suspension parts and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth a little, look for slack or looseness in the tie rods, and up and down movement in the idler arm. Any slack here will amplifiy the vibration quite a bit. Get the front tires off the ground and spin them looking for side to side runout from a bad tire or bent rim, or a rim that's not seated right. And shake the wheel looking for loose wheel bearings. Get the front tires balanced.
