Question on 17 X 8 with 255/40/17
I just bought a set of Chrome IROC rims 17x8 with 0mm offset and 4.50 backspacing. I have 245/45/17 on the car now and hate the look of them. They are too narrow and too tall. Looks like a pizza cutter wheel.
My question is could I run a 255/40/17 with only 4.50 back space and not rub in the front when turning? Or will I need to add a hub centric spacer of about a 15 mm?

If you already have the 245s on the car, you should be able to figure out how much spacer -- if any -- you need for 255s. Just use a tape measurer and see how much space you have left with the 245s and the steering wheel turned lock to lock. I would bet that if you need any spacers you can use 1/4" non-hub-centric spacers from any parts store.
I had 17X8 ROH Reflexes with 275 tires and had no rubbing problems on my old '90 Firebird. I think they were a 5" backspace.

Re: Question on 17 X 8 with 255/40/17
Thanks! I talked to the guy at my local discount tire and he went ahead and ordered the 255/40/17 tires for me and is willing to test fit them for me before I buy them. I think am going to pickup a 1/4 inch spacer like you recommended in case there is any problems or it is close but I think it will fit.
I measured my old BFG 245/50/16 on ARE wheels and they came in at 10.3 inchs wide using a digital microgauge. They are not supposed to be that wide but they are (I checked it three times with the digital guage). My 245/45/17's on the car now came in at 9.5 inchs wide. So if the 255's are around 10 inchs wide like they are supposed to be. They should just clear.

As long as you get the bs right, 255s will fit with no problem.
I've got 275/40ZR17s on my 17x9 ROH Snypers, with no rubing issues. I can't get my fingers between the tire & inner fender liner, but there are no rubbing marks. That's how close the tires are to the body.
