Anyone have a set of plans or drawings to build a set of weld in type SFC, Or know where to get some? I'm too cheap to buy someting I can build. with plans I could have them made up before I jack up the car & slid under neath with the ole meg, to install.

Re: subframe connectors plans.

if someone had plans of that precision where you could just read the print, build it and slam it on, said person would most likely be a manufacturer/fabricator who put time and effort into researching the construction and layout of the car and connectors. And after they put all that effort into making the plans, they are not going to just give the plans to you.

I have NEVER seen a set of plans posted or just floating around on the interweb that you could just follow like that. If you want to make your own, go ahead, do it, but you will have to build them on the car as you go. Its been done before.

Re: subframe connectors plans.

If you know someone that has a set then you can always measure them and build your own. Thats what I was going to do, but then I saw a set from UMI for $199, and figured its a better bargain compared to my time and materials.

Re: subframe connectors plans.

What is your time worth? Buy a set from Lon at Top-Down Solutions for $184 and weld them in! Say it takes you a weekend to research, fab and install, NOT COUNTING POWDER COATING! That means you will be saving $10-11/hour or $6-7/hour if you powdercoat by doing it yourself. If your job includes asking 'do you want fries with that?' then I guess it is worth doing yourself...

Re: subframe connectors plans.

I'm designing my own subframe connectors only b/c I'm certain my custom exhaust will be in the way of any aftermarket ones. I'm using 1-1/2" square tubing x 1/8" thick, which only cost me $15 for all the material. All I did was jack up the car and take some measurements. Should be easy enough to weld them in.

Re: subframe connectors plans.

I was dead set on building my own. Then I added up materials, plus the time to figure it all out...and decided that UMI's were so close to my own design, and the price wasnt that much more powdercoated... So I went with them.

I gotta say, Im glad I did. Unless you can get the steel for free or very cheap, its almost not worth it. Im not sure where some of you guys are getting enough tubing to do this job for $15...? Plus some plate to make tie ins for the control arm brackets and all. But if you can get everything for that cheap, then def do it.

BUT...I had a ton of other projects to do. So my time was precious. And I know what its like to want to build my own stuff. So if you really want to, I say go for it.

You can use some of the sponsers designs to get you started. Pick your tubing size and shape (round or square or rect). Then you gotta tie into the rear control arm pocket. And make your way to the front subframe area. Gotta be creative in how you tie in...but there are plenty of pics that should get you in the right direction.

My opinion...you need to tie into the pinch weld along the way. Maybe 4 or 5 stitch welds will do. And if you can weld to the floor boards in a few spots, Ide do that too. Some will tell you thats not neccesary. But Im not happy with how my UMIs came out only welded front and back. So Im going to tie them in to the pinch and floor soon.
