Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

G'day as the title sujests I will be ordering a set of 18x8" and 18x10" rims. I have searched and come up with 18x8 with 4.5" back space and the 18x10" with 5.75 back space. Can anyone with these size wheels confirm these will fit without hitting anything?
I'm running a standard width 10 bolt diff and hubs with LS1 rotors on the front.
Cheers

with a stock sized tire, the front will be fine. the rear should fit, but you mad need to "massage" things a little

Cool thanks. I was planning on running a 245/40/18 tyre on the front. I belive this will be close to stock.

I don't mind massaging the rear as long a the wheel fills the wheel well nicely and sits flush with the body.

the rears will probably sit flush with the quarters, so you may need to roll the fender lips

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

My old tyres on my 15" used to scrub over bumps on with people in the back so I was planning on rolling the guards anyway.

This info makes me feel better about ordering the rims. I didn't want to order them with the wrong back space and have them sent half way around the world and not fit.

The reason I ordered them direct from America is the Austrailan wheel importers said these wheels will cost about AUS$6000 without tyres. I got my set for AUS$2200. I will have to pay a bit of tax and shipping on that but its still well short of $6000.

Yeah I think so. I'm getting Boyd Coddington wheels which are being made to order.

Do you think I could have more back space without hitting the body or suspension?

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

a bit more would help the fender-lip issue, and tuck things a bit better. I have 18x8 with 4.5" bs and they tucked right inside the fender lip, i personally would not want to go any further out. with you current choice, 5.75bs would put you wheels 3/4" out further than mine, which would set the rim flush with the outside of the fender, then you still have a little tire bulge to deal with, im not even sure if rolling the lip would help things. If you could get 6.5" of bs it would set the wheels is a real good place

"18x10 with 6-inch backspacing rear. Use tires with an aspect ratio of 35 or less with section widths of 275 front, 275-295 rear."

i got that quote from a site a while ago, forget what company but they had listings for what fit theses cars in various wheel sizes, so i assume you would not need to clearance things with 6" of bs.

6.5 would probably require some inner fender re-shaping. You should be able to place place a straight edge on the outside of the wheel and with a tape measure measure in, in various places, to see where you will have issues if any.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

I might go with the 6" BS. I was planning on running a 285/35/18 tyre on the back so it should be ok. I don't really want to be re-shaping the inner fender so 6.5" might be too much.

I live 3 hours from where my car is stored so its hard to test it but I will call my dad and see if he can try measure for me.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

Get 6" bs 6.5 will require removing the bump stops.
I have 18x10s in the rear with 6 1/8" bs and I think 6 would have been perfect, I know.... what's an 1/8" but I'm picky. I am actually going to put a 1/8" spacer in over the winter. You still should roll the fender lip and you will have to hammer and possibly cut a bit of metal on the inner fender but it's really easy and it doesn't show at all and it is so worth it.

Also consider a 295 on the 10" rim, the tire shop talked me into 275s at first and the tread was narrower than the rim, it looked horrible, I made them change it to a 295 and now it looks way better, the tread looks exactly the same width as the rim.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

Yeah I hate to look of a small tyre on a fat wheel. The side wall just looks all wrong. I was going to start with a 285 and go from there. I think I will go with the 6" BS. I figure if it rubs too much I can put a spacer on the wheel, but if I got less BS and it stuck out too much the only thing I could do is shorten the diff.

For the front I was thinking I should get 4.75" BS to compensate for the extra width the LS1 rotor on a hub crates. From what I worked out it should sit the wheel exactly where it was before the brake upgrade.

I will be ordering the wheels by the end of the week. Then just the long wait while they are made and shipped over here.

4.75" bs is what you want for the front with a brake upgrade.
Get the 295 for sure, there is lots of room, I want to get a 305 if I can next time I buy tires.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

18x8 4.75 with brake upgrades.. 4.5 without with a 245 and proper /40 ratio tire.

18x10 with 5.75 with 295/35/18...285-35-18 would be better. any wider and it causes issues, this required fender rolling with a 1.5" or lower drop. true factory ride height with new working suspension will not rub with either. lowered ride height will definately with the 295/35/18.

6" bs to be safe if you really wanted to worry more about the inner quarter then the outer quarter fender work but you'll need to cut your bumpstops at this point. if your going to run 295/35 or wider profile you'll need to roll your quarters and massage your inner well as also cutting off your rear bumpstops.

this isn't an issue though, just relocate your bumpstops.

i wouldn't advise going wider then a 295 for a street car, the tires are heavy taking away from your power and track over bumps very easily.

i'm currently running the same setup but in 19's, this is just my opinion... good luck!

also if you haven't already i wouldn't order from boyd, their finish isn't as nice as the other billet comapnies out there and he rips off designs from others. you can find many other companies with similar wheels that you'll get alot more for your money and better customer service which is imporant if your not in the states.

intro, fiske, hre, boze, etc all make a much nicer wheel. in the custom car world boyd is the lesser of most here in the states when it comes to wheels.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

I looked at the Boyd wheels at the importer and they looked alright. I'v ordered them already so it's too late anyway. I just like the look of the Boyd Harm wheels and I haven't seen them on too many cars.

Anyway thanks for all the help with choosing my BS and tyres. I really appreciate it.

Cheers

well let us know how it looks and post many pics.
i figured 18" wheels would be pushing it on a third gen, but we shall see.
personally, i like fat rubber on 17" wheels.

edit:
wow, old thread...
slap my wrists please.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

I see this is a old thread but just want to disagree with Kandied91z about the 6" BS in the rear and having to cut your bumpstops. I have a 6.5" BS and the bumpstops on my car are no problem but I did have to do some hammering around the wheel well at a few spots.

Re: Ordering 18x8 & 18x10. Recomended BS?

Lol back from the dead alright. The wheels did eventually arrive( it took about 6 months) but one has some slight damage on the inner lip. I'm waiting on getting that fixed until I buy tires. Also one was missing a centre cap and they didn't send me the back space I asked for. I wanted 4.75 on the front and 6.0 on the rear and I got 4.5 front and 5.75 rear. They'll still work but it would have been nice to get what I ordered.

My rebuild has been a very long and slow process. I'm still waiting on getting it painted. I recently put the suspension in so I mounted the wheels to see what they look like. They are on the wrong side but you get the idea.
