Bent axle. Repalcement suggestions ?

On the dyno the other week -- the tech said "looks like your rear pass side wheel is bent". I get out and sure enough it was wobbling like mad. I couldn't believe how bad it was, for sure thought I would have been able to feel it shake at speed. But no.
These are brand new ROH ZS wheels that had just been mounted not 100 miles ago, how could this happen ?
Then it dawned on me, the axle. This morning I raised the rear of the car and spun the rear wheels by hand and observed the deflection, almost 1/2". Other side same thing -- though almost perfectly straight. Swap wheels and spin em up. Same result, passenger side 'wobbles' almost 1/2".

Am I correct in thinking the problem is a bent pair of axles and not with my new wheels ? Do I do any further tests to confirm this ?

easiest way to tell is cut out two discs out of ply wood and drillout the holes for the studs bolt them to the car and spin them see if they wobble.....or take a wheel off the front of the car and bolt up to the rear and see if it still does it ..but odds are its the axle not the rim ...from the sound of it .

just realized there was a better place for this question . . . as in the Transmissions and Drivetrain forum.

If you swapped the rims on each side and still had the same problem on passenger side, my guess would be the axle...

Sounds like a good excuse to go for a 4th-gen rear axle. I got mine for $100 + (very expensive) shipping on eBay, but that's only because every single junkyard I tried had nothing, and even if they did, I wouldn't want to unbolt it over there myself anyway. You'll get better gearing, posi, and disc brakes all in one easy upgrade. I got a 3.23 for my car, but there are some 3.42s and even 3.73s floating around if you look hard enough.

The swap is a direct bolt on pretty much...though you might need new e-brake cables (this is only a concern if you have a stick though)

Be prepared to redo the brakes though, my rotors were RUINED!

Thanks for the suggestions. I would go for the 4th gen rear, but its just not an option after I (foolishly ?) had the entire rear rebuilt and regeared. Purchased custom wheels that either would not fit on the 4th gen or stick out too wide for my taste. I do have a manual, and park where its hilly, and need my e-brake.

I guess that leaves me with upgrading the axles and diff cover and see how far that gets me.

Thirdgen-built wheels fit on the 4th gen rear axle, but it will stick out. Here's mine (stock 15s right now, though I'm planning an upgrade to 17 inch IROCs with the same offset), I personally think it looks pretty cool...

Just a suggestion is all.

yep, already on the list -- just wondering if I should get the summit diff cover or go out of my way for the T/A (dont think summit sells 'em).
