Whats the hose from the brake booster to the Plenium do?

Whats the hose from the brake booster to the Plenium do?
Any ideas? havent really got a clue...
but i was driving home today... hit the brakes and the pedal went to the floor =-o so i was sorta scared, i pulled over, and i started pumpin the brakes and i think the brake booster was hissing....
ill probably replace the booster and my master cylinder... only two parts of my brake system not replaced yet...

that explains that... but now i need to figure out why my brake booster just up and craped out on me
