Widest tires for 8" wide wheels??
Hey, Im asking this because I'd really love to have the aftermarket chrome IROC wheels on my car, but the company that makes them (Dante Designs) only makes them 8" wide (goin for 17's). I really wanted to put 9.5's in the back, but you see my problem. So I was wondering what would be the widest tire you could put on 8" wide wheels. I want to get p275's on the back, but Im thinking that might bulge....any help is greatly appreciated

My friend Steve runs 265/40R16's on the stock IROC-Z rims while road racing. Check out his car here:

While I cannot comment on the fitment of other brands, I know for a fact that Nitto's 555r Drag Radial 275/40r17 will fit, and look great. I've seen NUMEROUS late model Mustang guys with their stock 17x8 wheels running these tires. They give a nice wide rear tire look, without excessive or unsafe bulge.

275/40/17 would go on an 8" wheel but you would not get an effective contact patch. Most manufacturers recc. a min. of 9" of wheel width.

My dad has 295s on a GTA wheel, while a friend of mine is running 295s on American Racing wheels. Both were 8 inch wheels.

Just chiming in here,
I have owned Borbet 17x8 rims since 1991. Since then I've run both 275's and 255's (becoming more popular now) in them.
Basically the wheel size is suggested by the tire manufacturer. Back in my autocross days, BF Goodrich was always on top with this info. They have tables listing rim sizes (max/min), and overall tire circumference. Now, I know many who run 275's on 8" wide rims, but it really depends on the tire. You should be fine. Basically look for cupping, or odd tire wear. It's up to you what is acceptable. Other than that, you could chalk the tires, and look for wear under various driving.
