need help with loose caliper

hey guys,

i have been getting this annoying squeeking noise for a couple of weeks now. i took the tire off today and found that the calliper was loose. i had 6 hex sockets from my previous throttle body fling so i figured i had the tools to do the job. so i tried tightening the bolts but they didn't budge. not even an inch. so now i was wondering what strategy you guys have at this problem. also, what should the wheel lug nuts be torqued to? 80 ft lbs, right?

You missed the torque by one, so no KEWPIE DOLL for you. It is actually 81 FT LBS., but who's counting

Are you using the haynes, chilton, or GM manual.
Haynes= 80 ft lb for standard. 100 ft lb for cast aluminum.

Chilton= 1982-1985 80 ft lb for steel 100 ft lb for aluminum. 1986-1991 80 ft lb for steel or 100 ft lb for 1992 vehicles

GM = 81 ft lb for all.

GM owners manual = 80 ft lb for all.

I'm using the GM shop manual for my 85 IROC, which agrees with the 80 for all too. The General strikes again!

But of course and hayne & chilton were only half in the ballpark. I have found several typo's in my 89 GM manual as well. None serious, but aggravating anyhow.

The caliper is suppsed to float to equalize the pressure fom the piston and the other side of the caliper. The pads can also jiggle around a bit. That's probably what you're hearing.

i'm pretty sure it's the caliper. when i took the wheel off i moved the caliper to check for looseness and there was and it made the exact sound i hear when i drive. also for the sake of argument, i tested another caliper for tightness, it didn't even move and didn't make that annoying squeeking sound.

my fault, i should have put that in

Well, all these calipers only have pistons on one side, so they have to float. Maybe the other caliper you checked was seized.

The brake calipers have slider bushings and seals to protect the slide mechinism in them that are replaceable. Auto zone for instance has a disk brake hardare kit for the front for $4.63. Brakeware part# 5610.

You might give that a try, or just replace the caliper with a rebuilt one for $11.99 and that has the new bushings and seals already in it. And as I recall, the calipers have a lifetime warranty. Not too bad for 12 bones.

Well, the are rebuilt GM cores, and the only wear part is the seal, piston, and slide parts. Anyway, just trying to help and provide a low cost solution to the problem. So, don't shoot the messenger (me)

Anyway's, you pays your money and you takes your chances

Well, I think that even a $12 rebuilt caliper would be better than your 16 year old caliper.

Food for thought

Well, I tend to like 1957 myself for obvious reasons

But, I do have a 55 chevy though. 2 years more ancient than me

And my grand kids bought me a shirt that says "Older than dirt". I counter and tell them I have a cat older than you.
