Reman PBR Calipers

I received PBR loaded calipers from CarQuest--I was very disappointed. One caliper was complete with the exception of a spring. The other was missing both springs and the e-brake lever. Moreover, the guide pin bolts looked as if someone had simply searched the parts bin for something close. If this what I can typically expect from reman equipment? Since I have the old calipers (and they're complete), perhaps I should just rebuild them. Any advice?

That's what I've heard...it can be a crap shoot. I usually just buy used ones and rebuild them. It's not that hard and you're sure you will have all the parts you need. On the RARE occasion that a piston is scored, you will have to replace it, but after doing about 30 or so front and rear calipers over the last 2 years, I have yet to have to replace a piston or caliper due to damage.

I vote rebuild, or just use your pieces to complete the "new" ones, then you'll have spare parts.

Ed,

Any part numbers of rebuild kits or brand suggestions?

I have used Brakeware kits from Auto Zone with success, part # 60196...$12 each.

The pair I got from Advance was as complete as you could possibly get, right down to the caliper mounting brackets.

I ran into a similar problem up here going through Mackenzie auto parts. ARI i believe is the outfit they use for remaning them. One caliper appeared complete with the exception of a spring missing, and the retaining clip that holds the e-brake spring in place, was gone. The other was missing the carrier brackets, as well as the same spring. I also noticed that the e-brake assemblies themselves had an extra plate that the stockers lacked, AS well as a 6" ish stud sticking out. Now what it was for I have no idea. Also the calipers themselves were slightly different. Not finned all the way down and what not. With all this crap, I am not going to put my faith in anyone, and I am going to rebuild the stock units myself.

Glad I buy new from GM

Both my front GS Corvette calipers and rear LS1 calipers were cheaper then buying reman with no core charges.

There's a slight difference in 3rd and 4th gen calipers and you got a 4th gen caliper. They aren't finned all the way (LS1s mainly), the e-brake bracket is stronger to account for the steel dampener, hence the extra plate, and that big bolt thing is for holding the big steel vibration dampener that the '93-97 LT1 calipers come with. No big deal really as they will work the same, it's just that they look different. The 4th gen parts are becoming easier to find so that's what you got.
