I am ordering the Ground Control weight jack kit and have questions (Where to buy?)

I am finally going to order the ground control non-weldin weight jack kit for my car but need a couple questions answered. The first question involves the spring rates. I have read every post on this bored and even called ground control, but am even more confused. I figured that a 700 front and 150 rear with 9.5" springs would be sufficient to have the lowering that I want (stock height to 2.5" drop) on my primarily street driven car. However, I keep reading that 150 is way too soft for the rear so I don't know if I should up it to 175. Secondly, ground control told me that a 150-175 rear spring would be fine, but I should run an 800-850 in the front. In every post I have read everyone says that 800 is way to stiff for a street driven car and even for some auto-x. Should a 700 rate spring be sufficient for the front or should I go higher. Lastly, I am just wondering about the best place to order these from, ground control, strano performance (couldn't find them on their website), or any other place.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have 150# springs on the rear of my car, and I think they're "just right." I mainly autocross, and most of the lots are bumpy as hell, so I don't want to go too crazy with the rear spring rates. Same for the fronts which are 650.

I got my weight jacker kit from Strano's -- call 1-888-6STRANO and ask for Sam Jr.

What rates you choose will depend on what else you plan on running with the car and what your main goal is with it.

I'm running 850/175 w/Koni Sports and will be using Kumho Victoracers(V700's) r-compound tires. My car is setup for road racing mind you.

Guys with track only road racing cars tend to run the highest rates up front(800+ fronts). The autocross guys I've seen run anywhere from 550-850 fronts and 125-225 rears.

If you want a street/AX car I'd recommend something between 600-800 for the front. If you dont plan to run on r-compound tires I wouldn't go higher than 700. For rears I'd do as slow305 mentioned and consider the condition of surface you'll be running on.

Another thing to note is that with higher spring rates you'll need more damping. I had KYB(non-adj) dampers in my car and while it kept the A to B street driving quite comfortable they did anything but control the car at AX events. With my spring rates the KYB's have about 1/3rd of the rebound and 1/2 of the compression force required to properly control the car. I've since bought Koni Sports which are perfect for anything from stock rates up to what I run front and rear. Bilstein HD or revalves, KYB AGX, Tokico Illumina 5's would also be good choices.

Sam Strano Jr. has been mentioned here and is a great man to talk to about your decision also. He ran a '91 1LE at stock height with 35/21 swaybars, 800/150 spring rates and Koni Sports on 16x10 wheels with Kumho V700 tires(265/45/16) to win a championship in SCCA AX. He's a strong believer in the lower rear rates(125-175) but is also using a Torsen T2R diff which seems to be better suited to the lower rates.

If you want up to a 2.5in drop the free length you've chosen is perfect(same length I'm using). Keep in mind the lower you want your car the higher the rate you'll want on the car to keep it off the bumpstops(which may also require changing or proper cutting of to allow slightly more suspension travel).

Hope this helps a little,
Justin

Thanks alot you guys, I told ground control that the car was going to be primarily street driven and they still suggested the 800 and up springs for the front. I really only want about a 1.5-2" drop all around on my car, but want the adjustability if I ever want to change that later. I figured 700 wouldn't be too extreme but would help keep the car aff of the bump stops like RegaPlanet pointed out. I am going to be using KYB Gr2 struts and gas-a-just shocks for now, but plan on upgrading to AGX's soon. I will give Strano's a call, I was just confused because they didn't have them listed on the site.

Thanks again,

Terry

Hey Nazzz28 & Slow305.Have/did you get a quote from either one for the kit + s/h.I was just going to order the fr. kit this thursday.Im also concerned about the fr.spring rate.Do you know what is the lowest rate available & what increments they go from there.650in lbs sounds pretty reasonable for a daily driver.Ive already got the Rr. set-up w/170in lbs spring. They actually feel better that the beltechs i had before.

I have 750/175 and for a street car its a pretty good set up. Great track performance yet not to ruff on the streets...but for me personally since I now almost never drive my camaro on the streets anymore (to make cops pulling me over) I would rather have something stronger...maybe 200-250lbs would be nice

As for where to get it from I got it straight from Ground Control....though they did take like a little over a month to get them to me...and kept telling me this and that and giving me the run around till they actually came in.

The front springs on the GC kit are Eibach ERS springs. Unlike Pro Kits and Sportlines which are usually available in only one rate for an application, the ERS springs are "universal" and usually are available in 25# increments. Probably anything from 100# up to 2000#. Just pick whatever you want.

The rear springs in the GC kit are some other brand, but I would imagine you can get those springs in a variety of rates, too.

Not sure what the price would be on just the front weight jackers ... IIRC, I paid $450-$500 for the whole kit.

I am still up in the air about what rates, and am waiting for a
response from strano performance parts (Sam Jr. is out of town).
I think I will be going with 700 front and either 150 or 175 rear.
I just got a great deal on a set for tokico 5-ways and will be
using them with the kit. I was quoted $459 for the whole kit
by strano's and will be ordering them this week. I have parts
stacking up and can't wait to tear in and get everything down.

I HATE WINTER !!!!!!!!

I think Sam will be back Tuesday or Wednesday (autocrossing in Florida this weekend ... not sure if he's teaching an Evo School after that or not). I have his cell # if you want it.

I think what he was just at was the EVO school was it not?

Nazzz28, that setup you're looking at should work really well.

Yeah, he was in florida autocrossing and teaching a school, and should be back on wednesday. I don't need his cell phone number I can just wait until then.

Slow305 - I was wondering how long it took for you to receive your kit when you ordered it. I am trying to set up some time off to install all of the parts that I have been collecting this winter and want to do it as soon as possible. I can't wait until everything is finished it should feel like a different car.

Regaplanet - I am hoping it will work well together. I figure the adjustable shocks will allow me to set it up pretty well for the street.

I think it was about a week coming from California to Maryland.

I ordered my kit from strano (slow305 thanks for the reccomendation), they were extremely helpful. I went with 700 front and 150 rear. I am going to be using tokico 5-ways all the way around. I have the spohn lower control arms, adj. pan hard rod, relocation brackets, alston sfc's, and will be ordering an edelbrock stb for carbed cars. I can't wait to get all of this stuff installed.

Thank you everyone for your help, and I will post some pics when I am done.
