255/45 on 17x9.5?

I have a set of the SLP/Ronal Firehawk wheels. These are not going on a third generation F-body, but an '80 El Camino. Pics of the wheels test fitted are here (warning giant pics)

Mike Lis has these on his Grand National with GNX flares:

He confirms there is serious rubbing and warns against the 275/40 in front. Does anyone have pics of a 255/45 on a 17x9.5? I'm worried it will look too small (section width 10.2, tread width 9.2). Measured rim width is 10 3/16". I may be able to clear 285/40s on the rear which are 26" tall like the 255/45. 275/40s are 25.7" tall.

Thanks!
Chris

The rest of the 'Camino can be seen here

I would think it would look too small - the 4th gen WS-6's come with 275 width tires on a 9" rim and they look about perfect to me... Same with 245's on an 8" rim

(don't mind the creepy hand in the picture, someone was a bit over-excited I guess..)

hope this is helpful

Although 275/40 tires look better for the rear the 255's won't be that bad. I have 245/45 up front and 275/40 out back bot on 17x9 wheels. So check out my site and look at some of the pics of the two and your size will be somewhere in between, look wise that is.

WOW!! The RONALS look awesome on that Grand National!

Every car I have seen this rim on, they all look awesome.

Can't wait to see pics of you El Camino once the tires on mounted!

ShiftyCapone: I actually looked at your site earlier today (sorry about the wreck!). 255/45 may be ok - I just can't find any pics of this on a 9.5" rim. It looks like this size originated with the 17x8.5 Corvette wheels. Luckily my father-in-law owns a tire business, so I can look the various sizes over before I buy.

formul8: I agree the wheels are awesome - that's why I bought a set knowing 9.5" is way wide for the front of a G-body. I wish they made a 8.5" or even a 9" version.

In any event my sway bar will have a shiny spot - it has one with 225/70R14s! The Malibu I had also had this with both 225/60R15s and 245/50R16s.

255 on 9.5"

Sorry, i do not have any pics, but i can tell you that a 255 looks perfect on a 9.5 inch rim, i had 17x9.5 on my camaro last year and it is the ideal combo.

Car: `86 SS / `87 SS

Transmission: `95 T56 \ `88 200-4R
Simple:

If you go to BFG's site and pull up a PDF size/spec sheet for a tyre that comes in 255/45R17, it will TELL YOU the acceptable rim widths, & 9.5" is within that range.
