Front Crossmember

Hey guys, I need to replace my front Crossmember (engine Cradel) because its in bad shape ive had to have it re welded twice by tha part where it connects to the control arm i think. the second time has lasted me a lot longer than the first weld but they told me i should replace it as soon as possible. I went to Chevy and they told me GM has DC making it and that if i wanted a new one it would cost me about 1200 from another place that still makes them. So my question is do anyone of u guys know where i could find a new one for a lot less than that maybe an aftermarket one or anything will due.

PA Race cars makes a K member for 3rd gens. I don't have any experience with them for our cars, but for the stangs they are very high quality...

you can either get a used one from a 'yard, or get a aftermarket tubular style.... spohn isnt releasing his until '04, so right now the only option is PA race (i think thats the right name)...

if you do a search for K member you will find alot of topics about this.

keep in mind that PA sells race K-members, they're not intended for street use, and i imagine that if your car is eatin up stock k-members, then the PA k-member isn't gonna fair much better

damn so a aftermarket k member from PA wouldent be wise to get then. so then i guess ill just have to wait for tha 04 spohn or keep looking for one in tha junk yards. nice to know that tha PA wouldent have been a good choice to pick thanks.

I just took this one off of a Formula 350 tpi car, I think it was an "88" where do you live?? I would be willing to sell for a very reasonable price.

Hi,
Back in January when I had to order my crossmember for my 82 Firebird, the dealer informed me that GM just discontiune them that week. But the guy made some calls and I got a orginal GM unit for $750. Guys the parts for these cars are getting expensive and very hard to find. If you are stil using your thirdgen as a daily driver, you should stop now! I love diving my 82 Bird, but I now realize that I can't drive it everyday. So I have to keep the Mitsubishi Galant. The Galant is my everyday driver.

The repair job to 82 Firebird after the accident was very expensive. But I was lucky and was able to get all NOS orginal parts. I doubt very much that if my car was involved in another accident that I would be able to restore it agian. My Firebird is now home in the gurage where she belongs. She will only come out on the weekends for now on!

yah i know sucks ive been trying to find one around here for cheap but there aint many good ones around and the good ones are for like 83s and 84 camaros and i need one for a 89.
transam84 i live in Arizona and i dunno about buying one then having to have it shipped that part aint so light in weight hehe. im still searching for one.

BruceEmbry: i was told by chevy that the front K Member was DC in production from GM. They have another retailer that still had tha K Member but it wasent from GM they would have had to get tha K Member from this other place i cant remeber there name. There are Crossmembers for 3rd gens out there in storage but there not producing them like krazy at GM anymore hehe. but tha thing is if i can find another one for cheap i would rather take that then have to pay 900 bucks for a k meber. theres a bunch of salvage yards here in Phoenix its just i got no time to go out and look and when i do have time i find tha ****ty ones hehe

I am just curious, where are these crossmembers breaking??? I and a friend of mine have owned a 3rd gen for many years and also have bought many 3rd gen parts cars and have never found one with a problem. is there a common problem I don't know about with these cross members??? if you can please post a pick of where they break.

If a car is not well care for and start to rust, then the crossmember will become weak and break.

I never have had any rust problems on my 82 bird, because I go though it ever few years. When I go though the car, I clean and undercoat the underside.
My orginal crossmember was bent in an accident last Novermber. It was bent when the A-arm was push back underneath the car. The driver who ran the Stop-sign, hit the front right side at the wheel. As a fact the wheel took most of the inpact. If iit wasn't for the wheel being hit, the the firewall would had been bent and the windshield would have crack. But thank *** none of that happened. When she hit me she was travaling about 35 MPH.
I had the right side door replace, right fender, right side upper frame rail, crossmember, right side A-arm and all steering linkages, steering box, rotors, and right spindle. The whole front suspension less the left side spindle and a-arm is all new. All major parts are NOS GM orginals(no reporduction, no salvage).

It's the same part. It doesn't matter if it's an 84 or an 89. It's the same part.

cdarts I have to agree with you. I know 3rd gens are kinda split into cars or sort of, 82-82 then 85-90 then 912-92 but I can see what the diff would be on say an 84 crossmember than an 87 crossmember. is there a diff?? does anyone know for sure?? as far as I could tell they are all the same from 82-92, the only diff I could maybe see would be a diff one used on V6 cars but I really doubt it.

No there is not any differance as long as you used a crossmember that came from a V8
