Alignment setting suggestions needed...

I think my 89 RS needs to be aligned because it pulls to the right. To make it go straight I gotta tilt the steering wheel, and I can't take it anymore. I wanna hold the wheel straight or let go of it and have it go that way again. So, if realignment is needed, what settings should I get it set at?? Probably not stock right, because that's what they'll go by. It's a daily driver, but I like corners/handling, so if it can be even better than stock and still be OK for everyday use, great. Thanks.

The stock specs suck.

Aim for about -1/-1.5° of camber, +3/3.5 of caster (more if your car will give it), and about .15" of toe-in.

re

-1.0 camber is to much for a street car . id say -.50 at the most. just my opinion though although me and my cousin own an alignment shop!!

I had the same problem and posted about the specs too. mrr23 gave me some good info here:

Indeed, it cured my problem, which is exactly what you are describing.

glad to hear it worked out for you. using the specs i gave him will offer good overall handling w/o wearing the tires. anything over .5 degree either way will wear the tires on that side. this coming from another person that owns a suspension/alignment shop!!!

I gotta drop the car off tonight and I'm gonna write what I want it set at so I really need the best settings for what I want. Every1 says something different.

BTW, my tires are more worn on the right side and they are still pretty new. Maybe I take more sharp turns on that side, but I don't think thats it.

Alignment settings depend on the car and the driving style. Say any setting more than .5 either way will hurt the tires isn't true for all cars and driving styles. I've aligned many thirdgen cars and here is what I always used, after the usual talk with the customer on how "he had it aligned and the outside edges of the tires were heavily worn".
The stock settings suck, don't use them. Usually the max negative camber possible is around -.75 to -1, on the third-gens I've done. Quite often one side of the other won't reach .75, so I end up just using:
-.5 camber on both sides. Caster also can vary from thirdgen car to thirdgen car(on how far positive it will go). Usually +4.0 on the left and +4.5 on the right is possible(keeping the left .5 less than the right to help compensate for the crown of the road pulling the car to the ditch). Toe +1/16. If the tires are worn uneven, it still may not drive straight. Don't be suprised if they find some worn parts(idler arm for example), when they check the suspension. Make sure the shop fully understands you want custom specs. Quite a few of these 'new' tech don't know much about alignments, just how to adjust car until the computer shows 'green' on the screen--after they punch in the year/make/model which uses stock specs.

Am I right in saying alignment specs here in the Uk would differ from the US ? Reasons being we drive on the left-hand side of the road & the camber is different.

What are the right specs for us in the UK guys ?

Sorry, I didn't notice that....

Use the same numbers, just reverse the lefts & rights (i.e. higher number on the left instead of the right)

I have to agree about the driving style thing. Optimum specs also depend to some extent on what tires you use and what springs are in your car (which determine how much the alignment angles change during normal suspension travel, by controlling the travel). Although I'll disagree about tire wear from the specs I gave; I've been having my car aligned as I posted for 18 years and about 300,000 miles (500,000 km) now, and I consistently get greater than the manfacturer's warranty tread life out of my tires, even driving it a bit ..... ahhhhh, enthusiastically ..... from time to time.

Having worn out tyres can cause your car to pull. Having worn out suspension parts, if you have any, won't allow the alignment to be accurate. I would suggest getting some new tyres and have it aligned. I set my car to custom specs, most shops that I know of don't have a problem with custom alignments, just tell them what you want. I run -.5*camber, +4.0/+4.5*caster, and a small toe-in.

You could run more camber but you will risk wearing your tires out faster.
