Welder needing help.
I'm ready to start work on a roll cage for my car, made of cromaly steel. I've heard you can only TIG weld this stuff, is this true? Also all the welding I've done is TIGing 316L stainless steel, how is the cromaly different? Just looking for any tips before I try welding some scrap pipe.

I don't know if you can ONLY TIG it, but I would. Much cleaner weld, both in appearance and quality. TIG welding steel is just like TIG'n stainless but it doesn't "flow" as quick. I'd practice a bit and then hop right on it, just like riding a bike.

i beleive you can also use GMAW on CM, i ithnk all the winston cup cars are welded that way. i'd stick with GTAW since you're use to it. basically it's the same, i believe you'd want to watch for hot cracking and imbrittlement in the HAZ.

alright, sounds good so far.
hey ede, what would the hot cracking and imbrittlement look like? and what dose HAZ stand for? i've never looked at any welding books or classes(so i don't know alot of the terms), just learning by doing pretty much.
