4th Gen Rack & Pinion into a 3rd Gen?
I am in the process of buying the 4th gen rack setup that 355SS had modified for his car. He had the ends cut down and a prototype mount for it. He said that he drove it about 5 miles before removing it. He said the wheels would not turn as far as they used to because the distance between the tie rod and the ball joint was longer than that in the 4th gen setup. I am going to use a bumpsteer kit, but I know that won't address this issue.
What's the best/safest way of modifying the front spindles to correct this? Can anybody do the math to figure out the correct distance that it needs to be shortened?

You'd have to shorten the steering knuckle arm of the spindle.... basically, just drill a new hole for the inner tie rod end, some reasonable proportion of the distance inward along that little arm. I have no idea whether there's enough metal there to do that.

Umm....
I am hoping to switch a rack and pinion into my camaro but not sure what to measure to find the right setup for out cars.
I have access to a ton of them, I work at napa right now. I could try to take some home and test them but I'd rather be able to measure them in thee store.
any help?
thanks

can anyone point me in the direction for how much reduced steering radius i would get if i used the 4th gen power rack. how much steering angle do i have with the stock steering and wat mite i get with the 4th gen rack? i may want to reduce my steering angle to fit wide tires up front so they wont rub on the frame on the inside. wat do you think?

Buy a 4th gen and be done with it lol.
In all seriousness i see no difference in steering from my iroc to the trans am...although i can say my 3rd gen handles 1000x's better than the 4th gen.

Um wow! why would you even suggest that? without proper forging skills doing so will get someone killed! I would recomend building a bracket that bolts between the original tierod hole and the balljoint and locating the new hole along that bracket, but please don't just drill a new hole in your spindles.

steering radius may be the same from your 89 to 98... many different parts are involved. what he is getting at is using a 4th gen rack in a 3rd gen... Anyway, theres lots of info on this subject, on this site. This particular thread is now resurected from a 6+ year slumber.
