Driveshaft too short

Driveshaft too short
Hey guys....I posted about a week ago, about an awful vibration in the rear end of my car, and i really appreciate all your help.
Today, myself and a friend of mine that owns a garage put my camaro up on a lift...and started playing around with the driveshaft....the rear section seemed tight as it could be.....but in the front where the yoke goes into the transmission, it has a bunch of play......he said that the driveshaft may be too short for my car...
Is this possible, and if it is...how much do you think it'd cost me to have a new driveline custom made??
Thanks,
Dave

It's hard to reply to a question like that in an information vacuum. We can tell you that all of these cars with a manual or auto trans use the same drive shaft; that it usually fits just fine; and that unless your car has been growing, if your drive line components and your drive shaft are all stock, it's probably the right length.
More likely, if your DS has play where it plugs into the trans, your trans needs an extension housing bushing, which is what supports the front drive shaft yoke; and the yoke itself may be worn, and need replacing. You may also need U-joints. You can't diagnose those by hand unless they're falling out of the car trashed; if they've never been changed, that would be a great place to start.

Thanks...
If you need some info.....it's an 83 z28, 383 stroker, th-350 tranny..
The tailshaft of the tranny is leaking transmission fluid right around the yoke, if that means anything?
I love cars...just dont have the time to work on them all the time, with work and college....
So, im guessing that he was wrong about the driveshaft being too short, right?
He said it didnt look like it needed a new u-joint, because there wasnt much play in the back of the shaft....
If you need some more information, just tell me what ya need..

If you are leaking from the rear seal, it is a good bet that the bushing is worn and causing the yoke to move the seal up and down and allow fluid to get past. They are not too bad to change. Change the bushing and rear seal and you should tighten up a lot of slop.
