Opposite, the KB brace has the plates welded to a solid bar and the plates bolt to the subframe. A problem arises with this when the subframes aren't parallel. My subframes are all banged up there, so I'll be a challenge to get the bar to bolt up properly and flat. I may have to get one of the end plates rewelded with a different orientation. This is one of the reasons why I haven't installed it yet. Agoods design is better since angles wont make a difference since there are heims and it can be preloaded. But the KB is a bolt on.
More info the the KB piece. The bar is hollow and nothing prevents dirt and water from getting inside. Not really a prob for me, but it may be for people in snowy climates where the roads get sanded and salted. It could rust out from the inside if the ends aren't capped.

No. My subframes are pretty beat up from speed bumps and it wont fit flat. I am going to make my own using rod ends. I'll post more info on everything needed when I'm done. It will be straight foward and cheaper (hopefully), plus be able to offer some preload.

Interestingly enough, GM made a lower subframe support AND a strut tower brace for the smaller GM FWD cars.
My Beretta GTZ uses a strut tower brace from a 1990 Cavalier Z24 convertible and a lower subframe crossmember/brace/support or whatever you want to call it from a 1992 Chevy CORSICA! Both with direct, 100% bolt on!
I never really noticed much difference from either, but I'm sure it does help.
Pic of FACTORY GM Strut Tower brace (not factory on THIS car, but factory on a GM car anyway):

seems like only need STB for cornering and such
if i add one i will custom weld one up or yank one off a cadillac or something and modify it as i dont believe in spending a bunch of $ for a piece of metal
so the wonderbars tie the front rails together ?
that must help with engine torque flex then
i could easily custom weld one of those too,
i wonder what else would help remove engine torque flex
i cant care any less about cornering flex, as thats not what i aim to do with such cars, as straight line acceleration is all its about, no curves on a race track,
thanks

STB
Is worth the money to buy a STB from a company. Is to exact dimension and looks killer. If you make one yourself you may not make it exactly right. I got an edelbrock one for TBI. It works great and it looks awsome. Is powdercoated black and has a huge edelbrock logo on it. To me it was worth the 100 bucks. Time to make plus the powdercoating would be to much hell for me to comprehend. As for the STB is all you need............your fooling yourself. It only ties the top of the chasis together not the bottom. You need a STB + wonderbar + lower chasis brace to totally tighten the front end........if your really rich a K Member would help even more. As for the rest of the car........subframe connectors, 8 point cage, adjustable lower control arms and an adjustable torque arm. Go big or go home is my motto. If you do all these things i mentioned above your camaro will be as tight as a young virgin.........there will be no flex and youll gain horses as well........enough of the spagetti incident..........do it right. May cost alot for alll these parts but its worth it in the end. These parts are made by pros who make them to the exact specifications the car needs......
Hope this helps.....

This thread's been bought back from the dead 3 or 4 times... wow.
I've never seen this bracing before. I'm planning on a 3-point STB to go on with my SFCs, wonder bar, and new steering. I wonder if this one's any good.

Re: Why do third gens need this?
This is way old but, the brace on the right does not go under the battery tray, it bolts inside the driver's side wheel well on the other side of the steering box. It helps keep the steering box from flexing the ultra strong welded unibody.

I can't believe we still don't have a pic of the Kenny Brown lower brace support mounted. That's it, I'm going to install it! The finish of this thing looks like poop

REALLY hate to bring this back from the dead, but this piece was brought up by Vetruck when he wrote up his Ultimate Suspension threads and I just was wondering about this recently. I think he said he fabbed up his own version. Apparently this part of the frame was prone to spreading under stress, so this brace would prevent that. I know KB doesn't make these anymore but has there been any proven examples that this brace actually reinforces the frame in the way Vetruck explained?

Re: Why do third gens need this?
Came across this thread in a search.
I've had one of these Kenny Brown braces since before the thread started!
No pics. The car is mid LSX swap, so the brace is off.
It gets mounted under the front of the tranny, just behind where the sub frames come to their low point, in back of the wheel wells.
Put it on when I did sub-frame connectors, so I can't say how much it added by itself.
Gotta say, it looks like a great place for bracing.

I contacted KB about the brace a while back. Here's the reply:

Re: Why do third gens need this?
JamesC, good thread. I put mine on in '99. Any time you look at where it goes, you think; "that's a good idea".
For nostalgia buffs, I've got Rancho trailing arms and Panhard (80s). Plus a Jamex STB (early 90s?).

Something like this would probably be most effective if it could tie directly into those rear mounts.
This is apparently a common area that is reinforced on unibody cars. My E36 BMW has a brace like this, and the convertables got a more elaborate brace that ends up tying into the K member. Macpherson strut front suspension, similar to ours.
