which is the better design of torque arm
The one that attaches to the transmission; like edelbrock and BMR or the one that attaches short of the transmission, mounts to the body like global west and jegster?

BMR also one that bolts to the frame. They have 3 different one's I have the trak pac ta. Its a pretty sweet piece. It comes with a cross piece that welds to your subframe connectors and then the ta bolts to it.

Spohn stuff is top notch; thats what Redraif is getting once we put in the "real" motor! I wouldn't buy a torque arm that attaches to the trans...it places too much stress there, and you can really feel it, esp with a stick car.

That picture is good but it looks like the torque arm is very short.
You want one that bolts to the frame, such as that picture, or one that bolts to a new tranny crossmember such as one from Steve Spohn. Steve's design also includes a driveshaft loop. Recommended for all cars even if you don't race. You also want one that allows you to adjust the pinion angle. Recommended especially if the car is lowered.
Steve also offers his with poly bushings, recommended for street use, or heim joints for racing.

The problem with Steve's Torque Arms is that the custom tranny crossmember hangs WAY TOO LOW to run a Mufflex Y-Pipe for the hooker 2210 long tube headers.

I wiped out a tall speed bump before I trimmed it. Luckily it was a 100* day and I shredded the asphalt speedbump! OOPS.

I am selling a brand new Spohn Tq arm, that has the trans crossmember for the turbo400. It is brand new, but was installed on the car to hold up the transmission. It is black powdercoated, and has been upgraded with the spherical rod ends. Here is a link for more information on this TQ arm. http://www.spohn.net/index.cfm?fusea...t&productid=13
I am willing to take a loss on this arm if anyone is interested.
