tire pressure

what should i run fortire pressure??
i have them at 44lbs and it is a very firm ride
but they handle great at high speeds and conering any time

the only thing is that it only takes like 2300 rpm take off to roast the tires accross the intersection

is this because of the gearing or rock hard tires?

the tires are falken zeix

raising the pressure will cause less traction when launching and what not. But better on high speeds and also corner taking. Cause the tire wont squish down as much. Driving around with that tire pressure all the time will cause un regular tire wear to the middle. Due to over inflation. For the streets I'd suggest 30-33psi.

These cars are pushy and front heavy, so running ~32 in the front and ~28 in the rear helps the handling.

With most of the tires I've had on my car, I get best results with about 32-34 psi front and about 30-32 rear, with about a 2 psi difference front to rear.

44 is definitely too high.

though for drag racing raise the front tire pressure to its max (around 45-50psi) then lower the back pressure a bit. It helps with traction and higher trap speed (not alot on the trap speed but hey anything helps)

thanks for the input

44 is what the tire shop put in them
and the wear is very even accross the tire
not more in the middle like you would expect

i thought that this was high but wasnt sure

Most tires come with a Max. pressure of 32 psi. When these car were originally built in the 80's, there were not alot of high pressure tires on the market. Consequintly the dealers suggested pressure on the door does not apply to a good aftermarket high pressure tire with a stiffer sidewall. I've run 42 psi fronts and 40 psi rears on 245/50 16's and have for at least 8 yrs when I bought this car and upgraded it from 15" to 16" rims. I'm about about 2/3's of the way through my third set of tires and every set has worn perfectly at that pressure.

Not all 44psi tires can be run this high though, again only the stiffest sidewall tires can other wise the tire tread will bulge in the middle. I'm currently running Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP's. This Is the best 245/50/16 street tire I have ever driven on, and the best all around tire I have found(not considering the cost of any tire, just strictly all out street performance in mind.)

As for drag racing- this is not a good tire profile for launches. No performance handling tire is. You need more of a taller sidewall and lower pressure and the compromise would su(k for braking and cornering. My only suggestion would be to use BFG's drag radials if you want a drag set-up for a daily driver that will still corner and brake semi decent.

you need to do some research and find-out what your tires were rated for.

I have Firestone Firehawk SZ 50 EP ultra high performance tires. They are 44psi MAX PRESSURE... never run tires at their max pressure anyway. I run them at 38 psi front 37 psi back everyday driving. 41 psi front 38 psi back if I'm at an autocross event. 41 psi front 34 psi back if I'm going to drag race (haven't tested this one out much yet.... I think it should work great).

In agree with AFrikinGoodTime, and Garett92Z! I have Dayton Daytona 245/50ZR16 tires. I run 40 psi front, and 38 psi rear everyday on the street. It works great for me, This tire pressure recomendation came from an SCCA crew chief who used to post on these boards.

I have forgotten his name but if he is still out there maybe he will post too.

Thanx,ANDYZ28

I have a H rated tire. 245/50R16. I run around 30 front 28 rear. So from what I am reading it is to low? When I had 265/50R14 I was running 30psi and the middle was bad. And irocbarry, 44 is way to high. Glad to hear that you still have tires. That is alot of stress on them!!

I run the Firehawk SZ50 EPs. I do alot of weekend auto crossing and also I see the dragstrip on a regular basis. I have found during autocrossing that my personal taste seems to lean towards higher tire pressures in the back. For autocrossing I run 40 back and 37 in front. Why? I use the stock 16" crosslace wheels that came with my GTA. The side wall in the rear isn't tall, but it seems to be enough to disrupt the car over uneven pavement if the tire pressures are not that high. My suspension consists of Spohn panhard Poly/rodend, BMR rodend/poly, Spohn LCA bracket, and Bilstien HD shocks with new NNL springs. Oh almost forgot subframe connectors. All this was done trying to eliminate that rear end swagger over bumps when I finally figured out it was the play in the tires under hard cornering. For the strip I drop the rears to 30 and leave the fronts at 37.

My T/A is a daily driver so I have Goodrich Comp T/A all season tires. They will take 44psi max but the door sticker on my car says use 30psi. The tread makes best contact with the road at about 40psi but Goodrich does not recommend running that high, so I use 38psi, front and back. Goodrich said 35-38psi was ok.

To monitor the tread contact with the street, I drew a chalk line across the tread then drove a few feet and looked at how much chalk got rubbed off. Then lower the pressure a bit, draw a new line and repeat.
