I am planning on building a set of subframe connectors for my car. I will be using 2" square tubing. What thickness would be optimal?

i used 1 1/2 x 2 x .187 and 1x2 .090 (or so)

I used 1"5/8 tubing with a wall thickness of a bit thicker than .134.Anyone know which works best, square or round?I used round simply because I got hold of a tubing bender and there was less chance of me ****ing up the correct angles.

I've heard that square tubing is stronger than round, but I don't know if you would notice that much difference. I used square tube sfc's (Competition Engineering) for my car and they work very well.

I just order some 1 5/8 square tubing from work (cnc machine shop) and plan on making some connectors for my 84 Trans Am. every pick I have seen of them they are straight with no bends at all. do these connectors just sit on top or bottom actually of the sub frame and get welded on on and thats it ?? none I have seen match the contour of the floor pan nor do they bend to conform the the sub frames shape or angles so I am just thinking these just get placed up on the frame and welded in place, is this right???

Everyone I've seen is bent.I can't see how they would work other wise.Check out Hotchkiss or Global west(mine are very similar to global west except the brackets are a "u" shape and fit right around the sub-frame not just on the side of it)The connectors run down the outside of the underneath(check out pictures on net)where they can be tied in with a roll cage (as mine have).As far as fixing them,welding is king because bolt on will never give the same strength and apparantly come loose after time.

you have a web address for tose pics Eric? I have looked on Ebay and all the ones on Ebay are straight, I have a print out of a pair of Kenny Brown connectors and they are completely straight to. I agree with you Eric and that I am not sure how good they would be straight and just welded on the under side of each sub frame. I work in a machine shop so I have access to everything I would need to make a good set of connectors(except a break press) but could really use a good set of pics so I know a little more of how it should reallly look. Transam84 I didn't mean my pictures but suspension company ones,sorry for any confusion.Just use "Global west" as a search and look up 82-92 subframe connecters,you'll see exactly what I mean.The drivers side connecter has to in effect go around the deep part of the floorpan otherwise the ground clearance would be an issue.Also you'll notice that the subframes are not in line therefore I think bending the tube is the way to go.

Ps.The subframe connectors are attached to the SIDE of the subframes via a plate (mine are "u" sections welded to the side).Also look at Hotchkiss ones for 82-92 camaro in a summit catalogue(or on the net).Maybe the ones you saw where for other models.

From what I learned in shop class, a round tube is the strongest shape. The next strongest is the triangle and then the square. I highly doubt that the square tubes is stronger than round tubular of the same thickness and diameter

I suppose this rings true-ever seen a top fuel chassis built from square steel?
