Ok boys and girls we (3rd gens) are screwed!!!!!! (AB 2289)
"Most motorists want two things from their tailpipe inspections: make it quick and make it cheap. Modern technology now being used in 22 other states has done that and more. AB 2289 (Eng) will bring California's Smog Check program up to speed by implementing on-board diagnostic testing for vehicle model years 2001 and newer and more stringent performance standards for facilities testing our older, more polluting vehicles. These updates will save money for consumers and the state and boost the emission benefits of the smog check program by 70 tons per day."

Make sure you send an x-mas card this year to your local gas station inspection shop. You'll need to have a couple of friends in the right places very soon it sounds like.

Re: Ok boys and girls we (3rd gens) are screwed!!!!!! (AB 2289)
California Introduces Bill to Exempt pre-1981 Vehicles From Emissions Inspection Requirement
In 2004, legislation was enacted to repeal California’s rolling emissions-test exemption for vehicles 30 years old and older and replace it with a law requiring the lifetime testing of all 1976 and newer model-year vehicles. This year, a bill has been introduced in the California Senate (S.B. 1224) by Senator Doug LaMalfa (Senator.LaMalfa@senate.ca.gov ) to exempt all motor vehicles prior to the 1981 model year from the emissions inspection requirement. The bill will be considered in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on March 27, 2012.
We Urge You to Contact All Members of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee (Contact Info Below) Immediately To Request Their Support for S.B. 1224
* S.B. 1224 recognizes the minimal impact of pre-1981vehicles on emissions and air quality.
* S.B. 1224 acknowledges that pre-1981 vehicles still constitute a minuscule portion of the overall vehicle population and are a poor source from which to look for emissions reduction.
* S.B. 1224 endorses the fact that pre-1981 vehicles are overwhelmingly well-maintained and infrequently driven (a fraction of the miles each year as a new vehicle).
* For years, legislators, regulators and stationary source polluters have felt the heat from failed efforts to meet air quality goals and have looked to older cars as a convenient scapegoat, using false data and inflated annual mileage assumptions to further their case. S.B. 1224 helps validate the truth. The old car hobby should not continue to carry the burden of past mistakes!
DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the California Senate Transportation and Housing Committee immediately to request their support of S.B. 1224. Please e-mail a copy of your letter to Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org. Also, please forward this Alert to your fellow car enthusiasts. Urge them to join the SAN and help defend the hobby! Thank you for your assistance.

California is so gay. I've been stationed out here for over 2 years now... I'm from FL and can't wait to go back. If you're gonna buy a performance part that's not "SMOG" legal, who cares. Not everyone is a gear head!!! Your putting $$$ into the economy keeping businesses open. How much for a high performance 350 rebuild. Even a mild rebuild nice cam and mild head port gonna cost over a grand in parts. Why can't they just charge people double the SMOG price on PERFORMANCE CARS!!! Or you can move to FL were the taxes are cheaper and NO SMOG!!!

Cali's got to be the worst place to live. You cant have a car you want unless it complies with their laws. Sounds awful to me

At least in California, we can drive our cars 12 months a year and they wont rust out. I have 350 RWHP and passed our laws with no problem. They only bad about Mass. is it's in Mass.

why should they give a **** what you've done to your car as long as it passes an emissions test? who cares about carb#s and all that other crap...it's what comes out of the tailpipe that should matter and thats it. modify your car all you want as long as it stays clean. my .02

Re: Ok boys and girls we (3rd gens) are screwed!!!!!! (AB 2289)
I think what they fail to see is the volume of cars on the road now in days. Strict testing can only offset it so much, but it doesn't fix the real problem. If they handed everyone a new car today there would be just as much pollution in 5 years because there will be more cars on the road. Old cars might pollute more, but they don't make up a big majority of whats on the road. Electric cars may not pollute at all, but there is a lot of pollution that goes into making one and pollution that goes into charging one (for the most part).

I agree, if it passes, it should pass. Just give the car a # to hit and if it makes it, pass it

Can't go wrong with Cali, beautiful women, great nightlife, style/fashion/Hollywood(if you're into that), great weather, close proximity to the beach, mountains, dessert, valley etc and DIVERSITY. Also higher property value, higher pay scale but also higher taxes and more regulation. Sometimes you have to pay to play

Utah has great scenic roads to drive on, all 4 weather seasons, but I too would chose SoCal if that was an option. But this place isn't all that bad

http://www.smogtips.com/new-smog-law-AB-2289.cfm
"This new and improved program will have the same result as taking 800,000 old cars off the road, also resulting in a more cost effective program for California motorists." said ARB Chairman, Mary D. Nichols.
Sure sounds like her goal is to get old cars off the road - regardless of their usage.
(I guess) the point of the program is to get a longer smog performance history of the vehicle from the ECU, instead of the 5 minutes of testing performance that we have to pass (where-in you can do various tweaks/attempts to get it to pass). Actually we may have a better chance than some of the newer vehicles.
Seems like this is really the only impact to us:
B. Vehicles known to release large amounts of pollution must test at stations with the highest performance ratings.
So may not be able to go to the smog tech of your choice... will have to be a 'four star' location based on inspections.

I'm military and although I've lived in Cali for the better part of a decade, I register my cars in my home state. Normally even if your home state does have smog laws they don't require you to smog if you're out of state military. Who the hell wants to pay the inflated Cali fees anyway? What the heck does Cali do with all this revenue? They're still broke.

My hand is up! Check the sig!
At least here in SoCal I don't have to put my car up for the winter and don't have to worry about rust.

"That Mary D Nichols is a corrupt *****. John & Ken was talking about how she used data on greenhouse gases that are all from older cars from a supposed "Expert" that bought his BA degree online from somewhere in the middle east and was listed as a pedophile in the state of New York. It's people like her that make it difficult for us to enjoy our cars in this state"
You are correct. She and others like her have an agenda. I run both cats on my car so my hand is up.
