Should I buy or Not? 1991 Bandit II

Missed the picnic, hope you had fun. I went to go see this car. Love or hate them, its the Bandit II by choo choo customs. Black with gold trim, without the black trim around the bumpers found in the prior to 91 year firebirds. It has 124k, runs great, but needs a little love. Get it, or let it pass down the road?

It's unique.
Real problem getting any decals for it if needed.

Depends on price and condition, it's not a classic.

Re: Should I buy or Not? 1991 Bandit II

I view it as the same as the '82 pace car; the look isn't for everyone but if you have one, you may as well keep it original. There won't be as much interest for a re-sell if the original look is removed.

Some Choo Choo/Bandit II info here: http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=ban...utf-8&fr=b2ie7

Re: Should I buy or Not? 1991 Bandit II

Dude, get it. That's awsome. But you should know about it a bit more before you make your final dicision. What repairs does it need? What is the engine (should be a V8), Hows the tranni? Had it been in any accidents? Any hidden rust? How much is he asking for it/ $2,000? Go get it no matter what, the chassi in that is worth that much. $20,000? Unless it's in mint condish with 383 stroker in it, and a 4thgen rear end with a rebuilt trans, with a supercharger, no.

Re: Should I buy or Not? 1991 Bandit II

The car has 124K, auto 305, I think they called it the LB9, but not sure on that. It has gold dish trim, AC, PW PDL. It ran great, no rattles on the freeway. Felt like it needed now shocks, driver door sags a little, and power steering unit leaking. One repaint about 5 years ago, and has no dings, one small dent, that I think can be pulled out. Paint is better than average, minor scratches I think my son and I can take out. The decals are now available repro, but thats about it. He is 2nd owner, no accidents, and has no rust.

The price started at 5K, but we are at under 3K now, since he knows it will go to a good home, wont be abused or modified, and be with many other birds. We just bought a 91 formula 350 last month, so money is sort of an issue, but I think this would be a fun, great driver. My son says no, so I am alone on this one. There are so few of them, but I understand they are low in value, and have so many people that hate them.
Thanks for your thoughts and views!!

What redeeming quality does this car have? It looks like a base model 170 hp Firebird with a god-awful cheesy decal kit on it. It'll be a Maserati in the trailer park though.

How could anyone hate such a bute? Watch how many cars you buy, cause you will start neglecting your others. This is a great car though. Weigh you pros and cons wisely. Good luck!

Re: Should I buy or Not? 1991 Bandit II

Just a few facts to consider:

LB9s in 1991 were either 205 or 230 HP, both around 290lbs/ft of torque. No slouch. But that is of no significance, what is of significance is the rarity and if it was purchased through a dealership with that package installed. That changes everything.

"Bandit" second-gen Trans Ams are going crazy right now in value. Go ahead, do some pricing on them. They made more 2nd Gen Trans Ams between 1977-1979 than any other years, so being a tribute to the most popular and Iconic Trans Ams built isn't anything you should let the fashion police dissuade you from if you really want the car.

If this car was purchased through a dealership with that package on it, instead of taken there to be customized, and you can prove it, it can be worth potentially significantly more than a regular TA, just because of the rarity. Most WS6 cars were done by SLP, and they are worth more than regular TAs. What matters is if the owner has any documentation on when the modifications were done. If it was before the first owner took delivery from the dealership, buy it. If it was not, it's just a car that the owner had customized, and has no substantial rarity value.

Re: Should I buy or Not? 1991 Bandit II

Wanna bet that it has an L03 and not an LB9?
When have you seen an LB9 car with 15 inch wheels?
Read the links about these cars. I believe HPP has a nice article showing off the killer L03 under the hood.

Secondly, a second gen bandit is popular because 1, they were popular back then. That's why they sold so many. Old guys with money want to relive their youth. 2, the movie smokey and the bandit helped to cement this popularity, 3, although they were not fast, they still were available with top level drivetrain options. So you could have the fastest trans am in a bandit livery. Every other collectable trans am is collectable because they also performed well for the time.

All three of these things are not true about the car you see before you. It's a decal package on a base model firebird. They didn't make many of them because even in 1991 people thought they looked ridiculous. It's slow, 170 hp engine, and has a soft suspension. It had been nearly 10 years since the last bandit movie which had bad reviews, used an 82 firebird, and only had Burt Reynolds making a cameo appearance at the end.

It's not much more than going to the decal section of pepboys doing up any other firebird.

I assumed since the writer of the original post has a number of third gens, hopefully he knows a TPI from a TBi, but as my post says, that is not the point really. I had a LB9 Z28 w/15" wheels from the factory, but again, that is not the deciding factor if the car has any collector value AT ALL. If it had all the equipment you think it should, but was modified after delivery to the owner, it is LESS valuable than it was stock.

But if it rolled out of the dealership like it sits, it has collector value even if it is an LO3. If it was a stock Firebird delivered to the owner and was modified after delivery to the original owner, you are absolutely right, it is nothing better than a credit card fiesta at Pep Boys and has no potential collector value. But the fact that HPP even did an article on them indicates that it was possibly delivered with the package on it, and thus has "rarity" collector value, simply as a curiosity. Perhaps just not to you. :-)

I am the second owner, of a 1979 "Y84" "Bandit" Trans Am. It was sold new in my town and has spent it's entire life here in Sonoma County,CA. (Yeah, I know GM never called them Bandits)

I LIKE the Bandit II.
