Re: My TPI vs LSX
Interesting thread...
I wouldn't quite say that. I come to TGO on and off for technical info for my swap. I considered the LSX swap into my 70 Monte but decided that the cost involved with the motor mount, headers and various other mods required for that would put it out of my price range. So I decided to go with the TPI set-up. I like the looks, and the torque is what I am after. And Torque is what is going to get my ~4000 lb monster rolling, of course the 200-4r and 3.73 posi will help. But I'm not trying to build a high horse motor. Yes I'm using a mix of new and used parts and I have no expectations of anywhere near 400HP. That was my old build that was not streetable with the .5"+ solid mech cam and 3500 stall.... I'm simple hoping for around 300HP and maybe 400-450ish ft-lb of torque.
To me though there is no shame in either 1st gen sbc or LSx's they just come from different era's. Yes, the LSx has the advantage of newer technology but the history of the sbc is second to none and for me it was just so much easier to retrofit the L98 setup into my project."

I'm considering going with a tpi set up on my 72 monte carlo as well for the same reasons. First the torque as the monte does weigh 3800-4000lbs. Next it can be done fairly cheap to get it running.(stock engine of course) and also because TPI is what i know best. so it would be easier for me to install, find parts, combo's. Have you driven the monte with the tpi how dos it drive,

Then of course you would still have to swap motor mounts and all the conversion parts in it.

TPI swaps are cool in muscle cars too but have you consider a truck engine 5.3 or 6.0 LSx?
IMO the TPI looks better than the LSx truck intake and was easier and less expensive.

Re: My TPI vs LSX
I have lots of respect for vincent and the other guys but the tpi had its time just like the carb the lsx can make way more horse power and be smog legal( No Miniram is not smog legal) pass VISUAL and the sniffer...
im currently building a lsx and when im done a complete swap will be no where close to 6000... but with the same or better power...
facts are facts however its your choice and a personal choice to run what ever you want...

Re: My TPI vs LSX
I guess the only thing that hasn't been said in this thread is, if you want to keep your third gen all third gen......
Then you can build it like mine and make good power, have street manners, idle at 700 RPMs smooth, cruise at 70 MPH and get 20+ MPG with your air conditioning entact. Pass smog every 2 years without changing parts.
Or you can swap.....
Some of us would rather maintain than switch it's your choice.
And, in Vincent's case ....you can also have fun with kill stories.

Re: My TPI vs LSX
I have great respect for the SoCal crew keeping their cars original and staying with TPI, they have truely proved over and over how potent it can be.
Cost? well as i see it, FOR ME, i wouldnt want to spend that kind on money on TPI for 380+rwhp when there are other options available. But for them, let em be, works for them and i respect what they do.
Compairing the 2 engines (TPI and LSx) just shouldnt be done, vastly different, each bring to the table something to offer.

Vincent: Nice, I always like reading stories like that.
A question for you LS builders, where are you finding the low mileage blocks for cheap? My truck is nearing 150k and it would be nice to get some of the power back (or go to a 6.0L).

Re: My TPI vs LSX
I got mine from the junkyard chain "LKQ." Go on www.car-part.com and type in the year, make, and model car that has the engine you are looking for and it will show you every junkyard around you going from closest to furthest that has one in stock. Most list mileage as well. Picked up my 35k mile 5.3 for 800$ through them...complete engine.
