Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

I'll run as long as the car is healthy and the weather is reasonable. I haven't run since they moved the track but I remember it being really greasey on hot days.

First weekend in April?

Come on Allen. Lets get it on one time before you change engine. Are you scared you may lose cause my hp numbers are close to yours? It's just for fun with a little bragging rights.

I doubt if my engine will be changed out in time for the Invasion. I will bring what I'm running now.

I'm planning on being there. Looking at the site, it appears no pre-registration is required. Is that correct? Also, how is the crowd (LOTS of cars = few runs)?

Vincent it was very nice to see the dyno results of your impressive efforts for which you have worked towards for many years as many others. So what is a 360ci? Is this a 355 turned .40 block?

I'm out. I still havent found my 5800 rpm problem, and I wouldnt want to deprive you of my super-fast kick-butt intake.

That is the same day as the next meeting though, so dont miss out.

Yes it is but it's actually a 358 with an off-set ground crank with .040 pistons. Another way to make a 360 is .060 pistons.

What you been up to? Is you car still running? Do you still have it? Can you race it yet?

Been good. I doubt I'll make it out, started school again in Feb.

If the weather is favorable and you can get a few 1.6 60's you should crack into the 11's with the power you are making. Difficult thing about that with the Street Legals is all the imports dragging water up to the line, traction is inconsistent or void completely. Good luck out there.

An off set ground crank, well that's knew for me. Yeah my car is still running. I just been stuck paying for my newer car. The payments are high and the money is not lining up correctly so it's been a tough battle. I should have it back smog legal by Summer. I'm not sure if I will be able to race it this year as the car needs to many things by Summer. It's really feeling like a classic right now so I'm going to use it for school. Maybe I'll catch up with you all at the summer BBQ.
I been trying to get in contact with Gene to see what's up with him. I guess he has been real busy. I just been hoping that he is ok. So yeah I have not even been able to go by his place and visit and see if he is going to the track.
So yeah I'll be around a little bit this Summer. So stay positive everyone and just keep it cool.

Vincent took me 2 out of 2...best run (2nd run): me, 12.91 / 105.56; him, 12.69 / 109.82.
I got him outta the hole both runs but he ran me down; ran me down like I was runnin' a (stock) TPI LOL! My car has never hooked as hard as it did, but best 60' was 1.836. Thought I had him that second run......(R/T me .219, him .335).
Good fun.

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

Thanks Bill. Glad you guys had a good time. I thought with Vincents new motor he would surely best his old mark. I checked the weather in Fontana and it was not all that bad today. Even a 13mph WSW wind. By the way I would look into something like a Yank SS3600 converter for your car. With a stick shift he will mph better than you. However with a bigger torque converter I think you will be right with him et wise.

It sounds like it was probably the best conditions at the track all year, it will just be getting hotter.

With the horsepower you guys have to the wheels, shouldnt you two be in the low 12's? Doesnt Allen run like a 12.1 with his setup?

Thanks Julie.

I'm not sure of the attendance numbers......arrived @ the track about 6:30am; first run @ 10:48am; second run @ 1:19 pm. I was outta time and had to head home. All day event for two runs = too much time sittin' in the pits. I'm still glad i went though.

I hear you. That's the problem with having one track open ~8 days a year for a few hundred thousand hotrodders.

The problem with my car is the Eaton limited slip was not grabbing off the line. Only one tire was spinning for about 40-50 feet. Too much time was wasted. I will have a new Posi(Detroit Locker) by the LA Invasion. Best MPH for that day was 110.89.

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

So we both had a bad posi-traction unit the last time out. Interesting.

Edit: I took the car out for a good check to make sure the posi is now working as it should. Left two solid black strips on the pavement. Bring on the Invasion and all posers.

Hey Bill, a couple of thoughts on your car. Like I said above a change to a higher stall torque converter will net you a couple of tenths in the quarter. A change in gear ratio to 3.73 or so should net you a couple on tenths.

Also the governor on your transmission. You need to adjust it so that it shifts around the 6000rpm mark or slightly higher. That means changing out the weights and the springs. Not a big deal as they have kits for it and I did it to mine. I bet that would take a solid 1/2 second off your time.

See everyone at the Invasion.

Allen,
It's got 3.73's, but the DR's are kinda tall; governor is set up (low shift point) so that at WOT, past 4000 rpm, it shifts when I move the lever (like, right now). First run I shifted at about 6000; second run 6500 (yikes!). I don't think I want to go any higher on the stall (2600 now)-compromises normal drivability for improvement on the very occasional strip pass.... But, thanks for the input.

P.S.: I left the line punching it from idle...would have tried a couple more techniques, but the day got away from me.

Bill

can you put a trans brake in the trans to help your launch?

You would be surprised by the drivability of the newer converters. I have mine lock up around 43mph. Mine is not bad at all. You notice the difference for about the first day then after that everything seems like always.

The governor will give you consistency. I aways did better at the track when I left it in drive and let it shift on its own. Then again you can always go to the 4L60E.

Don things that leaving the line by punching it is the best method. In the past I have added some rpm at the line. This time around I will try the punch method from idle.

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

I have a governor that was previously producing shifts at about 6500 (that was with LTR setup; deemed shift point too high and swapped the gov), I could put that one back in and test.

I think I can get one free 're-stall' on my Edge converter, but sometimes, like going uphill at slower speeds, the higher stall (read 'slippage') kinda makes the car feel like a pig...but I usually only notice that when it's in third gear. Think I should get a re-stall to 34 - 3600?

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

I would test that governor again. If it shifts to high you can put in the next heavier weight(s). I still have the kit I bought for mine and has weights and springs in it that are left over if you want it. They are not that expensive.

I have taken mine on many mountain cruises such as Big Bear and Anza Borrego with no problems. Not all that familiar with the Edge converter but where your motor make peak torque I would go with 3600 rpm. By the way I bought a Yank PT4000 to get ready for the Invasion and see if I can get that 11.99 et slip. Got to keep the hounds at bay. You guys are creeping up on me.

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

I just got the results from Jon (91 slowcamaro), it looks like Vince has another knocking at his back door.

Once we get Jon's traction issues worked out Vince will need to look out for him too

Et...13.03 @ 110.xx (with auto trans)

Jon has the best manifold we have done to date 325/330 cfm.

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

Holy Mackerel! A 110.xx in the quarter mile with an automatic no less and what appears to be zero traction. I do say we have a new contender and to take the top spot at that. I'm highly impressed.

Jon, you need to get into Don's shop and get your traction issues squared away for the Invasion. I also highly recommend the new Hoosier street/radial tires. I had decent traction (1.70 60') even with a busted posi on those tires. They are in Don's shop if you want to take a look at them.

One more note it looks like upgrading your exhuast system did wonders for your car. Just another indication the Flowmaster muffllers are for show and not for go. I also picked up good power when I went from a 3" cat back to the 3.5" Mufflex system.

Once again very impressive numbers. Those 4th gens at the Invasion are going to wonder what hit them.

Re: Cut the bull, Time to go racing.......

It looks like the new exhaust did help out quite a bit.

Traction was a limiting factor but I ran right after Vincent on his second run and he had some serious traction issues too. I have factory boxed components courtesy of Don, urethane bushings throughout the rear, Global West relocation brackets, Koni adjustables on all four corners, an air bag and ET Streets. I'm thinking maybe 90/10 out front and if I get stupid with the credit card maybe a relocation kit for the battery but those are expensive to do right on hatch cars and I don't really want an on/off switch in my bumper.

I've got a bigger issue of the car laying over a bit going into third so I'm pretty sure there's more MPH in there. I will be talking to Don more about that for sure.

I'd like to see some video of my run with Vincent if he has any. He had me from the start but I'm wondering if the video would have any useful information.
