Re: Iron Duke Baby!!!

"First time a 4 cylinder was available in a Camaro. The compound curved rear hatch glass at the time was the most advanced piece of glass tech-wise to be put onto a car. It was also one of the most aerodynamic cars ever produced. "

I don't think reducing drag makes a difference at or below 45MPH.

But I will say it's a nice grocery getter if your other thirdgen is temporarily on jacks... maybe not for 3.5K tho.

What the hell's that suppose to mean.....LOL ...the bad part is I can interpet that about three different ways. I guess I walked into that answer and deserve it, ouch.

1) I forgot the meeting I said I would attend
2) I have too many cars already and no where to park another one.
3) someone would steal it, or "borrow it".......Tom?

Am I anywhere near on track to that comment?

Re: Iron Duke Baby!!!

If it was a 1985 Camaro (like the front end styling better that year) I would buy it.

Re: Iron Duke Baby!!!

Hell if you are going to build a 4 banger, ditch the iron puke and put a Honda in it.

Re: Iron Duke Baby!!!

That be blasphemy with the Honda drivetrain. Actually, there are plenty of good GM four cylinder engines that would make a nice alternative to the Iron Duke. Or construct an intake to put dual TBI's. Would be interesting to see.

ok well u shaved maybe 100 pounds off the front end. So now u might have adjust ur suspension, and even though that engine is light, the rest of the car is still heavy! idk, doesn't sound worth it (well not in that camaro anyway). IMO

Lt1 or TPI 350 motors are aprox 550-575 lb range

LS1 is 430 lbs

The 60* V6 is about 375 lbs... which I have already built and proven to be deadly but lacked straightline HP at 160 flywheel HP.

Sooo... Dropping even another 60 lbs and adding twice the HP from what I had? There ain't a 3rd gen alive that would touch it on a road course or autox.

100 lb drop of weight off the nose is major... this is more like 250 lbs which woulld put me at about 52/48 bias.

You need to read up on my old Camaro's specs. I have already proven what you "speculate" to be wrong.

edit: I would still rather build a TTA though- that would be my dream. I think i could build a tta with a all aluminum motor to top 200mph and run Nurburing and outrun the best exotics with the TTA car plus a 75K budget. I would sure have alot of fun trying.

Re: Iron Duke Baby!!!

ok i get that weight makes a lot of difference in acceleration, speed, and how it handles but also how much weight difference is there from the iron duke and that pontiac 4 cyl engine?

Idk why u would want that engine in a third gen tho. If a 4 cyl was to go in a thirdgen it would be an ecotec for me. Add better injectors, boost, exhaust and u got 300+ hp! and more reliable than the other one!

Although i do think a light engine that makes power in autocross would do quite good vs other thirdgens.
But with that said, idk what else they would be able to beat? If i were going to run a car in autocross, my first choice wouldn't be a thirdgen. And if i had enough money to put a strong 4 cyl in a thirdgen, well that engine wouldn't be in a thirdgen! Idk i guess its all subjective and like i said im not saying u were really wrong, just that i wouldn't put that 4 cyl in that camaro.

IMO

Re: Iron Duke Baby!!!

That superduty 4 motor is still extensively run in IMSA today. It also ran in a NASCAR truck series. They are called SD-4 motors and are for the most part "HALF a V8" Motor. They use a SBC Or in this case a Pontiac (interchangable) V8 cylinderhead.

These motors have INCREDIBLE low end torque. A Honda V-tech does not have crap in the torque department. It is more of a lightweight rpm motor and would suck in a Camaro at 3000lbs

The Iron Duke was a peice of crap heavy cast iron motor with low hp. It weighed more than the 60*V6 with less HP. If I recall the Iron Duke weighed about 400 lbs and about 120hp, the 60* V6 was 375lbs and about 135hp.

There are companies that make all aluminum SD-4's but of course the $$$$ goes way up. Kansas Racing Products for one (KRP). but at this point, the ultimate would be to go Cosworth at $20,000, but that goes against the basic Iron Duke format this SD-4 motor stays under
