11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
Saturday, November 17th, 2007 we will be meeting up for another run on Angeles Crest Hwy. For those who have never been to Angeles National Forrest, this is a great ride through one of Los Angeles finest scenic highways.
We will be meeting up at 8:30am (leave by 9am) at the Shell Gas Station at 4530 Angeles Crest Hwy:

I was on this road about 4 months ago, and it's really worth the drive! Angeles Crest has a lot less traffic than the road up to Big Bear, but there are cops on it on weekends, so beware. Fantastic road, great views, wonderful drive. There is a restaurant about 30 miles up the road, apart from hiking trails and campgrounds, that's about it.

^ yeah i used to go up there every weekend on my motorcycle and there are lots of cops. Maybe not as many now since its a little colder and motorcycles are not going up there much but there are cops hididng everywhere. I was pulled over going up Angeles crest by where you turn left on 9-mile there was a cop hiding there and he pulled me over for no mirrors. My fault for not having mirrors but make sure your car is up to spec so they won't pull u over for little fix it tickets

Dan you gotta shrink your sig pic, its too wide.
That's this Saturday? Doesnt give us much time to prepare. I've been on that road before, from east to west. One guy had a flat tire, I loaned him my spare, and still havent gotten it back.

Still have his address, we need to make a run to his house and tell his neighbors what a Ahole he is.

Re: 11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
It seems like all the events are always on saturdays. It would be nice if a cruise could be on a sunday once-in-a-while.
I love those roads. I go up there a lot for drives and to take pix. I was just up that route a couple of weeks ago to take pix of the 'vert. I got a couple of good shots in front of the 6000' and 7016' elevation signs. It was a weekday, and I didn't see any cops anywhere.
But the road, then, wasn't open all the way through. I didn't go far enough to findout why not or where exactly it was closed, but I remember seeing the warning sign along the way, saying something like, "road closed 24 miles ahead."
It's nice driving, so have fun! I doubt anyone will still be there by evening, but if so, take jackets and don't leave the t-tops at home! The temps will get a little cold!

Good stuff guys.
I'm sorry Kevin. Our group was toying with different dates and it was just this last week we decided on this Sat. (I'll check out my sig too. )
Our last one was on a Sunday so we thought we'd switch it up this time.
We might lay low with our cameras and such. It sounds like we were pretty lucky last time - althought it was the weekend all the fires were around. Perhaps thats why.
I dont have a front license plate, front tinted windows and I'm sure the cops love seeing my video camera mounted on the outside of my window. LOL.
End? No real end time.
My tour guide didnt make the 1st run. So this time around he's gonna show us a little more scenic routes and such.
Love to see you guys out. I'll be in my Saturn and not my 87 Trans am. Still working on her.

In my original post, I included a map of where we are meeting up at. Click on it, and then you will see a place to click where it says "Directions to". Map it out. I dont think its that far from Pasadena.

Re: 11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
How far in are you planning to go. Are you taking the highway all the way to until it ends near the 15?
See I live in Corona. I can meet up and drive all the way and then take the 15 south to the 91 west. That will get me home

Hahaha. Ah geez. I don’t know. I’m letting my buddy in his GTO kinda run the show this time. He knows all the hot spots and look outs. Let me ask him as he grew up running the canyons and is very knowledgeable with that area.
It was mentioned that a pit stop for lunch at Newcomb Ranch would be nice. I’ve never been. Seen it, but never stopped. Not sure where that will be in the timeline of the run, but it sounds fun. Saturday is to be a fun kick back, no pressure run. So we can do what ever works.

The preference is GM cars only, but its a free country right?
My buddy Alex should be there (from this board - chime in homie !!), and there might be another 3rd gen or two not from this forum. Cars will consist of GTOs, GTAs, GTPs, 4th gens TA/ Camaro's, Cobalts, Grand Ams, Grand Prixs, Impalas, IONs, Trucks, etc.
I'll be in my ION as my 87 is still down. Hey, dont laugh, it can keep up with 3rd gens!

Hey Gooseman since you have been on this road before. What is the estimated time from the beginning to the end. I know that we will be making some stops, I just need an estimate. I will be able to go as long as I take the wife to the movies in the evening.

Re: 11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
Well when I went it was until they closed off the road. If I remember correctly I was close to 7000 feet. I dont remember how long but, I google earthed it to the point of where I stoped and from my house (in Glendale) I went about 48 miles and the estimated time was 1 hour and 25 min according to the program. Dont forget thats a 1 way trip with no stops. So I would give it a few hours because their is a group of people and in this case, we will probably be screwing around, making stops, and you need to take into account the time on driving back. Hope this was helpful.

Well my son and I would like to come along, this will be our first "Run". I'll be in a white 89 IROC. I was just wondering if I should bring along a FRS radio.
Thanks

Re: 11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
FYI Cell phone use is very spotty on this route.
I drove it once, and the only place I saw that looked like a restaurant had a very small parking lot.
Another thing. If they have had icing problems already then they salt the road with what appears to be ground lava. It completely removed the paint from my rocker panels behind my tires.

Re: 11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
First off, gotta apologize for not even making my own cruise. I knew Brad and Danny would still hold it down in my absence. I had a real bad asthma attack late Friday and even though I snuck in some of my daughters breathing treatments, it kinda wiped me out. I’ve been fighting a head cold all week and it never got better.
A few of our Camaros and other people got called into work last minute. Even Alex on here got stuck on a chore and couldn’t make it out. He’s my resident GTA.
Sorry to disappoint. We do have to share the canyon with the bikes. The also congregate at that Shell station too.
From what was reported, it was a nice run. We’ll have to do another run after the holidays. I’ll post up the details and try to give you guys as much notice as possible.
ringo234: If you are looking to take your son to a real kick as shindig, there is a massive Toys for Tots drive (www.motorfortoys.com) on December 2nd. Its up here toward the valley, but where else are you gonna rub elbows with Lambos, Porches, Ferrari’s and such. There will also be a ton of domestics and imports. Lots of Vettes. This show gets better and better each year.
I got most of my group going to this show. If you are interested in rolling with us, cool. Other wise show runs from 9am to 1pm.
Once I get my clubs spot reserved with the show organizer, I was gonna do a post up on this board. But this works too!

Yeah a little slow to reply....my internet is spotty!
Glad to see at least one third gen representing! If mine were running I would of brought it instead of the Saturn...Yes, I still know RWD is superior to FWD-just had to dabble in the darkside for awhile! LOL!
Hopefully they'll be a better 3rd gen turn out next time! Definately a fun run! Definately pushed the cars to there limits! Definately worth doing again! We had a blast, even in our FWD...
Heres some pics from the run:
The end of the run, the survivors!
The lineup
There was definately a CHP presence- and apparently we caught his eye! Followed behind me/us for almost 20mins and didnt even pull me over for my BLACK tailights!

Re: 11/17: Angeles Crest Hwy Run II:
Wow...I race bicycles (mountian and road) and the Angeles Crest Forest is my training course. I ride up to Mnt. Wilson religiously every Sunday. But for about a year I was doing it on Saturdays and I have to say I have never, ever seen a third gen camaro club cruising the canyons. I've seen the Fiat, the old Corvettes, First Gen Camaro, Ferrarri, Cobra, Viper, Clubs, the usuall motorcycles, but never a third gen club up there. I've cruised it in my camaro several times since I live in Sunland. The first week of October I rode 100 miles up there to a point at an elevation of just over 7k ft to an area called Jarvis Memorial Lookout (way past Newcomb's Ranch). I had not gone that far before on my bike, but I must say it is the most beautiful scenery with pine trees and all. I highly recommend it. The road is closed 1/2 mile beyond.
I would like to join if there is a drive set up there next year. I'll look back here periodically to check.
thanks.
