The author is an idiot:
The author has to learn how to read and then comprehend what GVWR actually is.........
I discovered this secret ban after noticing the signs at both ends of my narrow Los Angeles-area street (a favorite cut-through route for drivers hoping to avoid tie-ups on bigger roads). The signs clearly prohibit vehicles over 6,000 pounds.
.........
If you look at the manufacturer's specs for these vehicles, you'll discover that they all have a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 6,000 pounds.

Having owned three Tahoe’s over the past five years it’s difficult to imagine driving anything else. Even with the astronomical prices we are paying for fuel you can’t travel a city block without seeing paper plates on a 21st century station wagon from the big three. The author needs to put the pipe down and step away from his writing instrument before he gets run over by the very same vehicles he is attempting to crucify…

It does say GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT. Meaning if the vehicle is capable of supporting 6000 lbs then its a heavy truck and not allowed on many streets.

If they enforce this law, it'll be just as trivial as the front plate law that we go through. Cops should really just be out solving serious crimes, not busting us for front plates or heavy trucks.

Well I just went out and looked at my 76 Chevy Blazer. Its 6200 GVWR.
Its regestered as a Station Wagon, because it has a rear seat. So how does this kind of law apply. For all intent and purpose its a Half Ton 4 wheel drive pickup with a camper shell on the back.
Even with the 4" lift I have never had a problem going anywhere.
I agree its probably one of those laws like Dismantling your car and hiding it in the bushes so you wont scare an approaching Horse and Rider.

I hope they do something about these stupid SUV's. I can see driving a Tahoe if you NEED one, but no one needs a 10ft lifted Excursion V10 just to go to the mall every week.
All that money Porsche spent on that ridiculous Cayenne when they could've developed a worthy successor to the 928.

The reason for banning them is because they destroy the roads. At home, my street gets repaved every couple years, and every house on the block has an SUV.
Would the streets last longer if they weren't experiencing twice the pressure from machines twice as heavy driving on them? The average car probably weighs 3500lbs, which is what residential streets were designed for. You really need to consider what some SUVs are capable of doing. I mean, the hummer in that article was rated between 8600 and 10,300 pounds - almost three times what the roads were designed for. And of course people could overload them.
So should they really be banned, given that they may end up causing the streets to last half as long, and then waste tax dollars remaking them? Or, instead of giving tax incentives to people who buy them, should the opposite happen if they're for residential use? Roads aren't cheap.

I just recently got the VIS for my 2000 Camaro SS. The weight as it left the factory, was 4242 lb. That was before it went to SLP. The 86 TA I drive everyday weighs 4279lb. I think the average car weighs more than 3500lb. Just the same I know people who have three + kids. What they drive is motivated by what they haul around all the time.Everybody loves to ride in my "Blazer" Six people no problem. Nobody wants to ride in my TA.Two people ok three and your pushing it four and they better be shorter than my Grandson. Just my .02

I'm pretty sure 4200lbs is your recommended maximum weight. My camaro was just over 3700 when last weighed with a driver, tools, spare tire and other junk. I just did a quick search and found that a 2002 toyota corolla weighs about 2400lbs, and the most popular cars nowadays are toyotas, hondas, nissans, etc. I think 3500 is about right even considering all of the trucks on the road

if banning 10,000 lb vehicles for 5000 lb ones is good, why not just ban 5000 lb vehicles for 2500 lb ones! Think of how much longer the roads will last!
Hell lets get serious and just make motorcycles the only legal vehicle to operate on city streets, course special taxes will have to be imposed on those of you who put a little more pressure on the pavement than others because of sheer first world gluttony...
Brilliant! a way to increase the longevity of americas roads and give people an incentive to lose weight.. and lord knows that could help a socal member or 5.. ive seen a few of you guys

He missed the rest of the sign. In Ca. they only restrict commercial vehicles, and then not all of them. When I am driving the service truck at work, I have to watch for those types of signs because my truck is a commercial vehicle over 6000#, but by definition commercial vehicles do not include pick up except when registering one. If you notice the signs at truck scales, they all say "No Pick ups." What I find amazing is the number of places where the city will zone for warehousing, have a street filled with warehouses with their driveways coming off a street, and then mark that street with a "no commersial vehicles" sign! How do you fill and empty a warehouse without trucks?

Those of you that are complaining about SUV's must not have any kids or large family or take family vacations. Stop your whining about them being too big or in the way. Just drive around them like you would if an old person was driving a car in front of you. Find other things to BITCH about. And yes I also drive a 1999 Chevy Suburban Sittin' On DUBS. I also drive 18 wheelers and 45ft Tour Buses.

Born and raised in Los Angeles on the westside over 30 years - 104th/Normandie, 62nd/Cimarron, Jefferson/Hauser, Cochran/Rodeo BL, Pico/Western, Dorsey High School. I was Vise Pres. of the original third gen club called Camaros Unlimited when our cars were new in the late 80's rolling up and down the Shaw.

People actually buy 4WD SUV's in SoCal??? What is the point other than wasting money and gas? Are they afraid it is gonna snow?
Heh heh heh...... I have lived in Chicago my whole life and would laugh at all the SoCal natives trying to drive in a blizzard!

Ah that looks like an RPG-7, product of the communist Soviet Union. I suppose thats as appropriate weapon as any to enforce "equality"
First you start off with SUVs and then you end up with Pol Pot running the country
and i wouldnt pay vincent a visit, Ill bet he holds a phat gat and will bust a few caps in your dome

Look at all the SUV haters. Some of your homies must want to come up missing. That will happen if you mess with any of my rides. And I will bring it to your hood. Where do you live? Don't make anything up.

Dang dog! Are you trippin' or something? You DO realize I was just kidding around right?
Are you really 38 yrs old? From the way you sound in your above post, it sounds like a much younger person talking or something. You know stuff like they usually say: "if you touch my car I kill your azz".
I sure hope you NEVER have to come into a situation where you'll have to actually kill someone for your ride. You can always replace a vehicle, but you can't bring back lost lives. This includes your own if you ever have to serve some hard time for popping somebody.
I tried to use lots of smiley faces in my posts so people know I'm just kidding around. However, maybe some people just don't get it for some reason.
Oh yeah, if you still want to know where I live PM me.

I could verify it if need be, but pretty much any road made of AC or concrete should be able to handle way more than a 3500 pound car. Besides the actual paving, the major problem is whats underneath it. Older roads were placed on native, and those cant handle a whole lot. Concrete over native is better than AC over native though.
Large trucks do the most damage. Dont forget most streets see trash trucks once a week, among other heavy vehicles like UPS/Fedex and the like.
