smog test - failed

Not my time of the year I guess. Here are the results:

HC 108/83 81/61 <-- pass
CO .71/.58 .08/,03 <-- pass
NO 767/706 1288/1307 <-- FAIL

The guy was a real *** about the car being modified. He also failed me because the idle rpm was too high to test the timing. The car idles in park at 900, seems fine to me.

Also, I don't know if it counted any in me failing, but he said my intake manifold isn't the original *duh* and he suspects it's a 5.7, not a 5.0. Additionally, he said my cold start injector failed (what?) because it wasn't connected. I'm running an 88 prom on an 87 and it doesn't do anything but cause a vacuum leak anyway, so it's not being used.

What to do...what to do? I think the NOx problem is 90% due to me having no EGR with my aluminum heads. Don, you busy?

You don't have an EGR and they didn't fail you for that? I had a heck of time with my IROC being modified as well, I do not have the cold start injector connected either but I do have an EGR and TrickFlow Heads and I passed on the first test - but the second shop because the first test only I went to wouldn't even test me because he didn't believe I had an EGR - even though it's still in the stock location

The NOX is the killer
And if you check your old tests you will probably find that the allowable emissions amount has been lowered.

900 rpm is too high for the idle in park or any gear. It should be closer to 650. If the car constantly idles at 900 or higher then you have a problem somewhere.

You might want to check the TPS and IAC. Also check for a vacuum leak.

650 in park? Damn, it has never been that low. The idle in gear is about 600.

I do have the egr hooked up so it looks like it works, but it doesn't. Visually, everything is fine. I am still figuring out what would be best to do. I may be able to pass without the egr being functional, I have heard of people doing it before. I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Josh, I'll be at my dad's Friday night and Saturday, if you want to bring it by. Passing smog is part of the service when you buy one of my chips. It shouldnt be idling at 900 in park, I didnt set it that high. 600 in drive sounds about right.

I'm going to leave my car at your dads shop today (wednesday), so it'll be there friday. We were thinking of adjusting the timing in the chip to lower my NOx and having it pretested to see if we can get it to pass, and then otherwise your dad was going to plumb the exhaust for the egr valve to work. I'm probably going away for the weekend(1st-4th), so your dad will have my car for the few days he needs to work on it.

I'm not sure whether we can make it pass without a functional egr, just by tweaking the chip. If you think it's possible then we should try, but I've got class on the monday (the 5th) at noon so you can see the situation I'm in. I could have my family pick up the car on the weekend after it's done, but that would leave you guys at liberty to decide what to do about the computer/egr, and I don't think you want to take it to get pretested

So I'm not sure if I should even take the trip, or if I could miss my first day of class of the quarter... I guess we will see after I talk to your dad tomorrow.

P.S. I wonder if the EGR is leaking and causing the high idle..

Yeah I had the same problem with the idle. Mine was around 750 and he would not pass it. I was able to get it down to 700 with the "adjusting screw". It must have been in to far and sorta bypassing the IAC. I also had to get the CARB number for my headers. Took it back and passed. They are getting stricter. By the way he had no comment on my SLP runners or the Edelbrock TPI manifold. They are also testing the base timing. Allen

I talked to Kevin last night so I know what's going on. I haven't had any internet access until now so I haven't been able to get on. I'll call you tomorrow morning, Don.

Here are the results as posted on the paper:

______rpm %CO2 %O2 ___HC ________CO _________NO Result
____meas meas meas max ave meas max ave meas max ave meas
15mph 1641 13.7 1.9 108 31 81 .71 .10 .08 767 237 1288 FAIL
25mph 1617 13.7 1.9 083 20 61 .58 .09 .03 706 199 1307 FAIL

formatting sucks.. I'll see what else I can do

Let me know if that's not good enough.

EGR and O2 sensor. Working at a test only, I see a lot of cars that don't pass on NOx. To make sure that the EGR is functioning, hook up a vacuum guage to it and start to pull vacuum on it, the motor should stumble, if it doesn't, try actually reacing up in the bottom of it and push up on the diaphram, if it works here, but not with vacuum applied, the diaphram is bad and you need a new valve. Also, make sure that you have vacuum to the solenoid. If you do, and the diaphram is OK, then the solenoid is bad.

Your CO2% should be as close to 15 as possible, with little or no O2, replace your O2 sensor and that should get better.
