Suggestions on DIY tune-up
Should point out I'm already researching on several supplier and manufacturer websites but just not finding enough/any review info or stats to make the best decision so I'm trusting others experience. anyways here's what's up
Okay so here it is, I'm doing my first tune-up by myself need suggestions for best quality and any info on what I'm missing as far as items go. The car in question is a 92 camaro z28 5.7L automatic heritage edition. I'm having a hard time figuring this out any feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks
hoses I hear in the dessert NOMEX is better than rubber/ need best brand and confirmation of what works better in desert
serpentine belt: best brand? for dessert heat that wont dry rot quickly
cap: $25 what I'm finding what's the best brand and model?
rotor $100-150 or distributer rotor $5: what's the difference between the two? why the huge price difference? and what are the best brands/models I need?
transmission fluid: What do I get? does the weight matter?
brake fluid: ags dot 5 $8 are there better brands? and what is the best dot rating to use
power steering fluid: valvoline $5
oil cleaning/new oil/ new filter/oil plug gasket: K&N oil filter $14 motormite gasket $4best gasket supplier?
fuel cleaning/fresh tank high octane: gumout/stp $3
engine cleaning carb cleaner: /degreaser gumout/stp $3 - engine brite $5
new plug wires: best brand?
new spark plugs: best brand?
new pcv valve stem: $4
new 02 sensor: $35 does brand matter?
possibly new gaskets: all around if possible shop/research parts and prices
new brakes shoes/pads: what are good brands?
new air filters: k&N $14
I am doing the work myself on research just once again my knowledge is very limited and I'm only looking for suggestions on brands since I don't have a lot of money to waste
thanks to birdtojag for the advice on what to do!

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
WOW, Matt! LOL.
Ok.....
Hoses: Goodyear and only goodyear. Lasts 5-7 years.
Belt : Goodyear, also Lasts 2-3 years.
Cap and rotor: MSD or accel. No "Spark tracing" with these.
Trans fluid: For a stock trans use dexron/mercon. I like valvoline.
For brake and power steering, use whatever checker/autozone tells you, AFTER they look it up. You want to use what the factory recommends.
Also, NEVER use ANYTHING that has a "Stop-leak" agent or additive in it! This is simply the wrong way to fix a leak in anything!
For oil in a daily driver I use Valvoline synthetic blend. Not cheap, but your motor will thank you! I use royal purple full synthetics on my race cars. Oil filter: K&N. Plug gasket: Get whatever they have, if it dosent leak, it was the right one.
Fuel additive: Lucas with top cyl lube. The stuff really works!
Plugs: On a daily driver, I like bosch platinums.
wires: MSD 8 mm or bigger.
PCV valve = any
o2 sensor = any
Gaskets: Fel-pro. Dont accept anyhing less.
Brake pads: DO NOT get anything that has a lifetime warranty! They eat your rotors, because they are made of a harder material than stock. Look on the brake board. I get mine from the dealer. (GM)
Air filter: K&N. Just dont be lazy about cleaning them. (Every 3 weeks.)
Most of this stuff isnt cheap, but in my opinion, they're the best.
Hope this helps!

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
yeah sorry it's so long but I don't believe in doing things half way and it is always better to be safe then sorry. I want to ensure that this thing will handle day to day driving out here in the HOT desert, quick green light launches, maybe a lil fun on an open road, and cross country trips all withing the next year

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
yes it helps more than you'll ever know! I've been researching most of these components all night. especially the 02 sensor 1 wire and 3 wire. Since I'm not in a cold climate and since I don't have money to put the borla or hooker I want on which I have learned will work better with larger headers which need the three wire, I save a ton going for the 1 wire btw you should read the camaro prayer post -funny

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
LOL, was just going there now...
Look on ebay for parts. They can be really cheap there. Saw a pair of ceramic coated headers there with 1 5/8 primaries for like 55.oo, today. That auction closes at around 5 pm your time (On mon.) He was in ca too...

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
btw i know i didnt buy a lemon but the car is in excellent shape despite usual wear on a 17yr old car with 2 brothers owning it. ANyways any clue why i can only switch to my brights/dims when the steering wheel is in the uppper most position. It's got me stumped and after many years working on computers and at radioshack, and fixing most electronic things the only thing i can guess is a contact in the turn signal level isn't touching correctly. Is this common?

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
For the brake fluid, stay with dot 3 or 4. Dot 5 will not mix with the other 2 due to what it is made of. It will turn all your seals to mush and can destroy your brake system. The only way to use Dot 5 is to replace everything, I mean EVERYTHING (Lines, hoses, calipers, prop valve, master cylinder and anything else to do with the brake system). Believe me - DO NOT use dot 5 in your car.

Re: Suggestions on DIY tune-up
Hoses: Goodyear GTR-5002
Serp Belt: GTR-4060980, have to run it like a 1988. Superior to 89-92 belt routing.
Dizzy Cap and Rotor: MSD-8406
(The expensive rotor are disc brake rotors. You might need to replace those too, but those have nothing to do with your engine.)
Tranny Fluid: Valvoline/Castrol/Mobile Dexron
Brake Fluid: Use Dot4 fluid. Whatever brand.
Power Steering: Pyroil by Valvoline or Prestone is what I see. Both work.
Oil Filter: K&N HP-3002 (Truck filter, uses an extra half quart of oil than your factory filter. Fits fine)
Oil: Valvoline/Castrol/Mobile - I use 10w-30
Spark Plugs: NGK 6630
Plug Wires: MSD Super Conductors. Get either a custom fit set (DIY), the set that fits out of the box, or a set that routes over the valve covers and get some valve cover plug wire brackets.
O2 Sensor: Bosch, get the OEM Fit one.
