MY progress so far....
Ok, so i dropped into mesa pick n pull today for a seatbelt for my friends car, found a GREAT parts car, blue 90 RS, mint interior minus the drivers side seat, i jacked the front bumper off of it WITH aero GFX for $20!!!! Great deal, fenders are a little jacked up, well beyond use actually lol the aero side skirts are a bit banged up but can be saved.
Heres a pic of my new bumper, not putting her on til i paint the car (i was gonna paint it seperately anyway lol)
THEN i took that tpi chris and jason hooked me up with and did a little bit of polishing , OH! and chris saturday would be ideal for that motor if we can arrange it, im itching to get it on the stand so i can clean it up ANYWAY the tpi, one runner is polished using some stuff my dad jacked from the navy before he retired (its never-dull on crack) i wanna get some help sanding the plenum tho, the never dull has no effec (too bumpy)
And finally, i had to take a small break tonight to work on my friends RX7 with the LS motor swap, we decided to decorate his hood while he took a shower, the big black spot in the middle is the hole we had to cut so the motor would fit, its a truck motor so we cut the hood open for clearance purposes lol
(for disclaimer purposes i didnt write the big slogan on the front, that was my friend, it happens, all in good fun , freedom of speech and such)

I saw that 89 RS in there also, I got a couple of interior pieces from it. I would have taken more but right now I don't need much.

well i did a litle cleaning test tonight on the runners, theyre so black i decided i wanna clean them up, so i tried carb cleaner, rubbing alcohal and ether, one in each runner, the carb cleaner did the best job since i dont really have any solvent tanks laying around so looks like im picking up a case or two lol later im gonna clean up that back shed you guys dropped the motor by and make it my ghetto garage, is there anywhere i can get a nice roller cam setup that isnt gonna kill my wallet?

Re: MY progress so far....
Can get an LT1 cam pretty cheap off here. There is a guy in Tucson that might still have it for free.

Re: MY progress so far....
alright i posted in the thread to see if he still has it but all i can do is wait now lol we got the motor over to the shed, got all the vbelt crap off of it drained the pitch black oil out lol and then i started cleaning it up a bit. Checked the casting number, said it was a 305 so then i checked the suffix code and it turns out its an LM1 350 which is acceptable lol i spent and hour today trying to find bolts for my engine stand, failed. So i just got 4 farily long bolts and just ran some washers on there so itll sit tight.
Chris ill post up the pic of the lifter valley probably on tuesday, i work 2-10 today and i have school tomorrow morning from 8 to 2 so if i can squeeze in some time to get it on the stand in the next couple days id be amazed

Re: MY progress so far....
NEW PLAN*****
Just got an email back from chris smith at five star rebuild in Phx, asked him about an "86-95 2 bolt main long block" and asked how much hed charge me for a roller block since mines an LM1 and it doesnt have the bosses in it. He said he wouldnt charge me extra for it and it would cost $800. Seems like a stretch of $ for a motor BUT heres the list of what they do:
All crankshafts are reground, oil holes champhered & micro polished
Thorough cleaning including all oil galleys - engines absolutely clean
All blocks are bored, Sunnen honed, with new pistons, pins & rings
All cam bearings are replaced with reground or new cam custom-fitted
Every engine is custom-built (no assembly line) by professionals
All connecting rods resized with Sunnen stroking wet hone
All oil galley, cam & freeze plugs replaced
Long Blocks - 12 months, unlimited mileage in a personal vehicle.
The heads are completely clean, resurfaced, pressure tested and checked for cracks.
New valve guides and seals are installed. All valves refaced and seats cut three angles. The heads are assembled ready for installation.
Sounds like a good plan to me, just drop the LT1 setup in, throw the TPI on and GO i know where my 2 year bonus is going lol
was just gonna stick it out with the flat tappet until my instructor told me about them, he just got a ford 302 for his alpha romero (its a frankenstien car) and he said its excellent workmanship, good compression, no issues so im convinced

Sounds like a good project. Sticking to the T5? That would be a blast. I would love to get a manual Tranny for my car, but with my power ill need a t56. A little too pricey for me at the moment.

Re: MY progress so far....
its like $50 more but i dont know if i wanna jerk the guy around since hes already cutting me a deal on the core trade in ya know? normally it would be like a $200 difference as long as its a 1 piece RMS ill be happy, if i ever scrape enough cash to need a 4 bolt, ill buy one lol besides the 350 tpi is a stepping stone to an LS buld lol

Re: MY progress so far....
I'm getting my block bored for about $200. Heads are getting done with port and polish and bigger valves for about $450. I can find you a 4 bolt 1 piece rear main seal with the bosses for the roller cam for a lot lest than what this guy is going to do. Ryan has a core I can use (I gave it to him, it's a rusty mess with no main caps) The yard I got mine from has a few and can probably get you one for about $60 or so with the core Ryan has. Let me know if you would like to go that route. Also, if we get this block from the yard, I would still like to try my ideas on your current block. Call me later and let me know what you would like to do.

Re: MY progress so far....
hmmmm sounds interesting. Im thinking thatd be good too but the issue for me now is its almost the first of the month, for some stupid reason i decided to have al my bills pay out that day lol
Lets see where we can go with this route moneys gonna be a little tight til i can pick up some more hours though especially since i move out next saturday
if we find a motor lets pull the intake there to be sure about the bosses lol

Re: MY progress so far....
Agreed. I will find out how much they are wanting for the block. I will see if we can get there on half off day. Because I didn't research the engine you bought, I will go halves with you on it. And I'll make sure that what we are getting is what we are looking for.

Re: MY progress so far....
Not completely sure yet, I will try to find out later today. Depending on how much, I might be able to front you some just so we can get this sooner. Jason owes me for the fenders and front support yet. So, no worries. I'm ordering my parts here soon and then I will see what I have left to help you out.

Re: MY progress so far....
Ok pulled the heads today, managed to smash my middle finger in there (ironic) but i got them off, took a measurment of the cylinder and found its 3.5 inches across... i sent chris a pic of it to make sure im not crazy but 3.5" is a 305 is it not?
ALSO my LT1 setup was delivered today

Your tape was a little off, but yes, it's a 305 unfortunately. I will get you the 350 block like I promised you would get. No worries.

Re: MY progress so far....
alllright bringin it back from the dead here lol
i just got my new gauge pod mounted up under my center vents and ive got the lights wired up, i didnt have enough time to finish hookin them up but ill probably do it wednesday in class lol
im not too happy with the lights in it they just had little blue slip covers and they look green so im probably gonna wire the blue LEDs into it here pretty quick
it looks really clean too im excited so once i get them hooked up and problem free im gonna take the face plate off my cluster and block out the temp and voltmeter since ill have the pod anyway so ill just have the tach/speedo and fuel gauge

Re: MY progress so far....
ok i got a small update here;
Got the fender and front clip sanded down the other day, primed em up with a filler and now im just working out the small dent and the spider cracks from the front end, gotta prime the GFX still and then do a fine grain wet sand so its not so attractive to paint and dirt, Ive decided im just priming the car, between the previous primer, the hatch that chris shattered, and the front end being primed im only 2 doors and the top away from being completely done, who knows maybe my dad will actually hold up his end and give me a space and supplies to shoot the car

Re: MY progress so far....
ok so apparently Chris's GTA and my Camaro are breaking down simultaneously with the same problems lol Hes been overheating out of nowhere and so he decided to install a 160* t-stat and right after he told me his plans when i was driving home from emissions, i pull up and my coolant boils.....
Joy... The car had been running at 240* for a while and i summed it up to the insane heat here its got a new rad, clean hoses, system flushed the works. The thermostat is the only thing i could think of, i open my hood as im seeing coolant spit from my resivoir, and i touch the top hose, it was empty....so ipulled my thermostat to find it stuck closed, figures cuz it was a 180* Mr Gasket one. then i put the new gasket on, set the housing up and started putting the bolts in and one of them stripped out, keep in mind i had a small 1/4" drive ratchet, and i didnt over tighten it but it just kept threading and threading but popping loose so i figured it was stripped out.
I had to go to autozone and buy a $25 helicoil kit to fix it, then the gasket is leaking because it was too thin so we had to go BACK to autozone for a new felpro gasket, and finally got it all sorted out at around 2AM...ish lol
On the positive side at night under normal driving and some spirited driving conditions it maintined itself at 160*/170* i cant wait to see how it takes the heat
Jason; you win. I hate bugs....

Re: MY progress so far....
its running phenominally! Im amazed really, i drove it like 10 miles earlier in the heat and it never peaked over 200* it sat at about 180* til i hit stop and go traffic and ive got to say its nice my next step is that dang EBL FLash for changing the fan settings but for now its great.
IMO the tech faq is wrong about 160* tstats, ateast in our climate, open the door and instantly feel the heat, the freshly oiled roads dont help that either because they retain more heat that a normal blacktop road lol
