Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Chad sent me a PM this morning.

He is not 100% sure about where our group will be located, however he thinks that we will probably be in the same spot. He said that they usually don't move groups unless the group asks to be moved.

I suspect that we could get moved a few spots to either side, but will end up in the same general location as before.

Lets see if we can get a larger group of Thirdgen.org members then we had last year. We had a good turn-out and we have some nice vehicles. We definately made a positive impression on a group that is dominated by 4th and 5th gens.

You may have the only GTA, however Ricky and I both have Trans AM's. Some others may show up.

I'm a huge fan of the GTA's. I promise you won't feel out of place. The whole show is about having a great time. Hopefully we'll see you there.

This is definitely a bring what you got and have a good time kinda show. There are old beat up cars in primer all the way up to 6 figure cars. Just a good time for all, lets see how many thirdgens we can get together!

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Bring what ever you have. The Gathering's are about people who love Camaros and Firebirds. The show is secondary to the event and not the main purpose for the event. There are not many GTA's at the Gathering, and it will be good to have one present to represent that aspect of the thirdgen Firebird history. Any GTA that is running is one less car that got scrapped and crushed. Since it is a Tallahasse car it probably does not have a lot of rust? You can park it next to my TA which came from the factory with the PW7 cross laced wheels. Many unfamiliar people confuse it for a GTA since they think that those wheels only came on the GTA's. It will be good to have a GTA and a regular TA to make comparisons between the models. As far as cars that are in verious stages of repair, a couple of years ago I almost brought a $175.00 91 RS with a V-6. It belonged to a friend. I was going to buy the car drop a 350, 700R4, a posi rear, and make a street rod out of the car. It was a solid black t-top car with no rust, but had been run hard with no care for many years. I hesitated on the purchase and it was sold to another interested party, but the point is that I would not have been ashamed to have it sitting on the line at the Gathering.

that's my dilemma. well that and needing to rebuild my steering.

People in ATL are friendly (so long as you stay out of some rough patches) but they do suck at driving. got rear-ended in my mom's cobra going to visit family for Christmas. i was at a stand still in rush hour traffic and some a$%-hat decided he was going to try to swerve in and out of stopped traffic at about 70+.... needless to say my moms cobra stopped him.... poor cobra.

i could probably stay with family, but their driveway isn't the friendliest.

rob. if you decide to go, print out directions from mapquest. the hotel is off the interstate north west of atlanta. you have to make your own reservations for a room,or go to the forum an see if any one else is solo and would split costs. im going up thursday and will get there in the afternoon. we will be leaving from the savannah area around 9-10 am. your more than welcome to meet along the way from there and follow in..

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Rob, we are originally from Thomasville, and have driven that route hundreds of times. From Tallahassee take HY 319 north towards Thomasville GA.At Thomasville, go north on HY 19 towards Albany GA.At Albany, pick up the GA/FL Parkway which connects to 19N. Follow the GA/FL Parkway to I-75, about 50 miles. Go north on I-75. Try to avoid Atlanta when the morning or afternoon rush hour is going on. Avoid 7AM to 9AM and 4PM to 7PM. Traffic is especially bad on Fridays. If you catch Atlanta at the right time, you can drive from the south side to the north side in 20 minutes, and never have to break the speed limit. As for the dirvers in Atlanta, they are great compared to the drivers in Washington DC. The Marriot Atlanta North West is the first exit on I-75 past I-285 by-pass north. You will see the hotel on the right. Exit right, turn at the first right, and the hotel is on your left. As Tony says you can probably find someone on the FBodyGathering site who wants to share room costs.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Im also bringing the family so we have to have a room. It can be an expensive trip and something to plan out and prepare for. If you decide to go, lets exchange some numbers in case of a road emergency. charles, kevin and i are towing cars and have rescue ability if necessary. and for the record, i would drive but with family going and gas prices, its cheaper to tow.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Rob, hopefully things will work where you can attend.

I would not have been able to attend this year if the wife had not loaned me her debit card... Betty is the best!

Yes, I will do haul-in rescues if needed. The only criteria is that you will have to say three times, F-350's Rule, or my favorite, It takes a Ford to haul a Pontiac..., or insert, a Chevy.

Seriously, if anyone has a breakdown and needs a haul in, 828-399-9580.

Chevy makes great trucks. I have owned a dozen Chevy trucks in my lifetime, and never had a bad one. I just love to pick at people, to see if I can get something started. Just wait until you are an old fart. You may have the urge to start trouble also.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

In Tonys picture our club is up one level. We usually take up about 30 spots up there under the trees. Atlanta traffic is not all that bad. No worse than most major metro areas. Our interstate is a major hub to all northeast states as well as southeast and west coast to east coast and vice versa. Take your time and pay attention to where you need to be. The only bad thing is if you are going 75 north and exit the Windy Hill exit just get all the way over to the right on the exit and you will loop around and run parallel to the interstate. I'll be there on Saturday with my 92 red Heritage Edition car.

Funny you mention that as my old 91 Z got rescued and towed about 3 times by my dad's F-150... so i would have no issue with that, nothing I haven't had to do before. but that isn't as embarrassing in my opinion as my old TR7 rescuing an S-10 and towing it into town....

I just wish it wasnt so much to get in. The room rate is not bad priced, gas is up there but the whole trip is too much I think they should make it free to get in if you have to drive over 200 miles. lol

i'm in the same boat: calculated food, entertainment (dave and busters), gas, hotel, registration.... i was at near $750 for the trip. no go this year, maybe if i know the dates sooner next year i can try to be there next year.

Banner looks great, the Thanks to veterans could be bigger, but that's more a personal preference on how i was raised more so then a flaw with the design or it's designer.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

We plan on $800.00 expenses for the gathering each year. Fran, Chad, Andy, and Sherry, the people who host the gathering make zero dollars off of it. In fact they finance it with their personal monies, and just try to replace the money that it costs them each year. Rooms at the Marriott are normally $165.00 per night. Andy negotiates the price cut for us, which is a significant discount for a hotel that nice in Atlanta. Sorry it is so expensive, and we have considered not going some years due to the costs, however it has worked out that we have been able to pull the cash together.

Rob, people drive across the country to attend the gathering. Last year a group drove from the west coast to attend. They give an award for the furthest distance traveled, and it is always given to some one who has traveled from one of the western states who get it.

As for the lettering on the banner, I would have liked to have made the lettering to thank veterans and active duty larger also, however banners costs according to the features that are available. The company Vista-Print sizes the lettering according to how much text is in each block. There are four blocks on this banner. The more text the smaller the font. The banner costs $55.00, and no one has ever offered to kick in some costs. If I had gotten a totally custom made banner it would have costs $400.00, and since I am paying for it myself, that is too much for me to spend.

not so much complaining about the cost. i think it would be worth it, just had too many things hit me financially to afford the trip. so it's not that i think it's over priced or not worth it. hell being able to go to D&B's a couple nights would be worth it. just between new steering for the vert, and now a new battery for my chopper i have no cash for trips - but that parts not really important since everyone has their troubles.

i can understand as it came from your pocket. as i said in my previous post, not a flaw of design or designer. sorry if it seemed like i was cutting your nuts off.

i have been trying to edit the post above now for about a half hour and every time i click submit i get a webpage doesn't exist message. refreshing does nothing, i have to close out and come all the way back in and of course my changes aren't saved. any one else have this trouble? since i can't seem to edit my post here it an addition to my last statement above.

- if i do go next year, hit me up and i'll see about sending some cash for the banner. i'm the first person in my line who has not been military. it's a pride thing to my family and the least i can do for them is try to show that their sacrifices did matter to someone and that atleast someone appreciated it. too many guys came back from Vietnam and were shammed upon arrive and that should never happen.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Hey Da Spudro,

Everythings Cool.

Looking back at my post, it looks like I over-reacted. Several members told me that we need a banner. I got a banner on a budget. I worked on the thanks to the veterans for several hours and could not come up with anything better. Maybe I should have presented it for others to offer ideas before ordering it...

I came from a military family, and never want to ever say or do anything remotely disrepectful to anyone who is serving or has served in our armed forces.

I understand about the money thing. We almost had to cancel ourselves. One hospital that I work part time for is going through a major re-organization and buyout from a larger hospital corporation. I actually quit working there for three months. They kept asking me to return, and when the new director of nursing took over I went back to work for them. The problem is that during that three months I got behind on my bills.

Then in March my father underwent a total knee replacemnt surgery, only to suffer a major heart attack three days later. I spent the week in South Georgia taking care of Dad, and used up most of my PTO time from the hosptial where I work full time. Thankfully Dad is doing much better now.

It sounded like I was kidding when I said that Betty loaned me her debit card, however it was the truth. She is paying for my trip to the gathering this year, however I will have to pay her back this summer. It helped that Betty's cousion is getting married in Newnan GA the same weekend, as I have to drive Betty to Newnan. Since we were going to be in the area, and she figured that I would rather be at the gathering then at a wedding she offered to loan me the money for G-16.

Maybe you and Rob can make a gathering in the future. Once you go, you will not want to miss one. The G's are the best weekend of the year!

Aggreed, we should always support our troops, even if we don't agree with our government's policies. Our Vietnam vets got a bum deal from the government and bumb deal from the American public. Everyone talks about how great the 60's were... I grew up in that era. The music was great and the cars were great, but a lot of things were not so great. I think collectively we had our heads up our butts in the 60's.

Every generation in my family served in the military. My dad crew-chiefed an F-86 fighter in Korea, and then went on build Titan II rockets for the Air Force. After that we went to work for NASA at Cape Kennedy in FL from 1965 to 1973 during the Gemini and Apollo programs.

I was all set to go into the Air Force, and on to Vietman, and even went through four years of ROTC to get ready. When I went for my physical, they found a defect in my spine that ruled me as physically unsuitable for duty. I was disappointed at the time, however I was probably lucky, who knows?

Come to G-17 if you can't make G-16.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

I'm coming from Tampa area. I registered under ThirdGen.org (I hope I wrote it down correctly, I registered weeks ago).

I hope to be able to park with you guys, as the group I was with last year (Fbody, Inc.) kind of fell through. Not everyone is coming this year and Jim said I should register with TGO.

I may be calling for a tow in, lol. My truck is coming too, but I loaned it out and it is already pulling a thirdgen. Crossing my fingers she makes it though. I will definitely be hitting up someone to look at it while there!

We are leaving Thursday after work, and staying till Sunday.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

I like your banner. Subtle, People will be looking at all those thirdgens you'll have out there though.

The only gripe I have with the show is it gets stale around 5 pm. I wish they'd find something to involve the whole group. I've given them ideas the last two years along with other people but they have not changed a thing. But, if people keep going then why change? I thought it would be neat to get pro's or volunteers to do tech sessions. I'm sure there are a lot of folks that could give good advice or show how to do a mod or install or tune something on a car. That would be neat, just have different stations at different times. Others suggested cruises, treasure hunts, poker runs and such but hey, it is their show. I usually show up Friday afternoon, stay late come early Saturday and do the same and show up Sunday to help pack up. I think I'll just do Saturday and call it good. My car is nice but not as nice as all the other stock thirdgens that will be there.

Re: F-body Gathering G-16 May 2012

Extra events are set-up and hosted by various clubs. If you are interested in a poker run or something extra talk to Andy or Chad by PM on the gathering site. Pitch your idea, and how you want to set it up and they will give you some guidelines. I remember a few years back one of the clubs set up some off site 1/4 mile runs at a local drag strip. I would love to get to lap a circle track sometime in Amanda (the 86WS6), and get some times and speed numbers for her. She is totally stock with 29,300 miles on the clock, and should be running close to what she was when new. This year I plan to make the cruise on Saturday afternoon, but will refrain from anything high-speed or competitive as the tires are 6 years old, and although they only have 4K miles on them, are probably begining to dry rot. I don't have the money this year to replace them, so I will just drive the car easy and hope for no problems.
