poll: Car show or raffle?

here's a post from albani about the third gen roundup

I would like to suggest maybe doing a raffle also if we have enough prizes. It would give a chance to those who don't have a chance at winning a prize for their car. One ticket per car owner (third gen only).
here's my reply

that is a very good suggestion, and might solve this debate I'm having with myself.

For example, if the grandest prize we have in terms of $$$ is the donation from borla, do we give that to the first place winner in a certain category, who probably has the car that has no need for a exhaust upgrade?

We have gift certificates from different places, the smart thing to do would be to draw names out of a hat, and give who ever gets their name drawn first, they get their pick of the prizes available. I promise out of just what we have so far... everbody will have need of most of it, but some won't have need for everything.. does that make sense?

It also makes since that a raffle would encourage more people to show up, especially if a good percentage of the people there might actually be able to go home with something cool just for showing up, even if they don't have a show car

I left that section on the website ambiguous to allow us the flexibilty to change things like this.

give me your feedback. pro and con, either here, or in a PM
I wanted to start a poll to get a clearer vision in this subject. please vote in the poll, and then post your thoughts.

I'm thinking that so few of us actually have show cars, that prizes going to only show cars will frustrate and discourage the masses

then again, if you signed up for the gathering because there were plans in place for a car show, I want to hear that as well..

Let's be honest, judging cars is a subjective, dangerous path to trod within a group of friends. A drawing out of a hat would be the fairest thing, and would lead to a lot less hurt feelings

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

I can see giving three prizes out to the top cars that show but also have something for the people that travel the farthest, wildest paint, unusual things, most people in a third gen, all that go along with a car meet.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

I 100% agree with the Raffle.

I think the majority do not have "show cars" and may be discouraged from even trying, because they "know they can't win, so why bother even trying" mentality.

Whereas the people who have more need to fix up their cars, are more likely to come in the hopes that they get something.

Not real keen on the idea of 1st drawn picks...2nd drawn picks...That would obviously make the "better"/more expensive prizes go first.

On the same token, and I have a solution for this, winner gets no choice as to what they get."We are drawing for the Borla winner. And the winner is......" But everybody is welcome to exchange their drawn price with somebody else. For example....Personally? I have no need or desire for an exhaust. If I drew it? I'd be more than happy to trade with someone who drew something they didn't need, that they drew. Win-win for both people.

I would like to discourage just taking the prize home & simply selling it. Lets keep the prizes in our TGO "family".

And back to judging.....Who would judge? We'd need some totally independent judges. People who know cars, but not connected in any way with anybody from any of the Texas clubs, to make it totally fair.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

the borla is the trickiest part... to the right person it's by far the most valuable prize we have to offer, potentially worth over $1000 to somebody that needs it.

to somebody who doesn't need it, it's practially useless. That's why I thought trying to find a way to allow the first drawn names to pick the prize that they think they can use. I promise you somebody will want the exhaust certificate and if we get down to the last prize and it's still left, I have an idea on a crative way to get it to somebody that needs it, and still allow the drawn name to get something cool out of it too.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

I think the poll at the top of this thread should have a third line to chose from that says "both".

Doing both would make everyone happy, but would make things difficult for the person deciding what prizes go where.

not knowing how many prizes we'll have available, I didn't want to promise more than we can deliver

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

have a few plaques made for best of show / 1st / 2nd / 3rd - everyone can judge.

do the raffle for any sponsor prizes.

good thought... I actually bought a box of plaques last year.. wouldn't take that much to get them ready to use for this year's show.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

yeah i think we should do a show, even if there are no trophies and just simple ribbons or something cheap as awards. it would be nice to recognize the nicer cars. I don't care if i win or lose i would just like to see where i stack up against the ret of the 3rd gens in our region. We are doing this whole event to show off our cars, why would we not have a car show? You could do the raffle as well if you kept the show awards cheap/simple.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

I think a car show with plaques and a place of honor on the website and also a raffle for the prizes is very doable.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

i just believe a raffle makes it to where anyone can win whether or not there third gen is nice. a show is going to be won by the most money. always has. always will. like mentioned above the top car doesnt need the top prize. but simple prizes for show would be cool. but there would have to be judges from each region to make it fair.

but thats my opinion. the most money wins show. period.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

Like already mentioned;

I like the car show with plaques for other things in addition to most expensive car...
Farthest driven to get to show
most radical idle
owned the longest
biggest improvement since last year
etc.

Then hold a raffle for any sponsor prizes.

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

So is the Third Gen Roundup for just the guys in the South Central Region or can a guy like me from Nebraska come on down? There really isn't anything 3rd gen related going on in these parts so I thought I might take a vacation to Texas and see how you guys are doing. That is if I can get the ol' girl ready for the trip lol!

Re: poll: Car show or raffle?

OH MAN! come on down! If we do have an award for Farthest driven (no promises) you would be shoe in!

let us know on the official thread of you decide to come, and we'll put you on a special "interstate" list!

FYI, I came up with the name Thirdgen Roundup specifically so people from out of state wouldn't feel like they weren't welcome (like Texas ThirdGens would have done)

But i think the word "roundup" evokes a regional flavor that is cool
