GM 5.7L truck motor for new project?

https://www.gmperformancemotor.com/parts/19432778.html

Wondering if anyone has tried putting some power into one of these? Its getting harder to find older "replacement" engines these days, and just trying to see if someone has any advice on a good engine for my 87 5.7

Thanks

Yes, swapping engines is very common especially the 350. However, what are your goals and what is your budget/mechanical abilities. The engine you've linked is not worth the hassle at 210 HP for $4700. Oooof. You'd be better off with a crate 350 from any one of the reputable shops, build your own, or explore other OEM 350 mills (L31).

That's a pitiful motor for a swap. A serious downgrade in every way from your stock one.

Why are you looking to "replace" your existing one?

Because it has 387k miles on it and I was looking for a good base for my long-desired 871 project. Think a big baddy sticking out of the hood would look awesome.

For the same money, you can get the L31 (Vortec) version.

Still a lot of money for a stock 350, but 250hp instead of 210hp and it has Vortec heads and is a better starting point for upgrades.

None of these GM Goodwrench stock replacement motors are going to hold up to an 871 blower.

The factory roller truck blocks are still pretty abundant. Check out FB Marketplace. As long as it's in good shape, a factory-style block would be fine for a typical street car.

I even see decent intact truck engines for sale on occasion. If that's the type of thing you're looking for, look for used options. Much cheaper.

Re: GM 5.7L truck motor for new project?

I have pulled several of the L31 truck engines out of the junkyard for $150 to $300 out the door.
Some machine work and new parts would be well under the $4700 plus shipping and you would get to choose what goes into it.
Building it is part of the fun.
