Ecm needed for 1989 Formula 350 (5.7) Auto trans
I am in need of a working ecm for 1989 Formula 350 (5.7) with auto trans. I can find plenty for the 5.0 L but none available for the 5.7 L. Also can one of the 3 connector ecu part # 01227730 be modified to work and not use the abs connector?
thanks, Don

I didn't think there was a difference in the ECM across engine displacements on 87-89 ECMs. Only the replaceable memcal varied.
Certainly on the 7730 ECM's it's the memcal that defines the vehicle, not the ECM.
The 7730 doesn't use a MAF sensor though, so you'd have to repin the harness to run a MAP sensor (among other things). It can be done, but not adviseable if you can just get a new ECM for your existing setup.

Get whatever you can, put your current memcal (the thing that programs stuff like ... what engine it's controlling) in it.
ECMs don't go bad very often. Possible butt not all that likely. Unless you've troubleshot it to the point that you have conclusively proven that there is absolutely positively no doubt whatsoever that it's bad, you'll probably just be wasting your time and money on one.
AFAIK there's no ABS on any of these cars. You shouldn't have to modify anything about any ECM for any of them in any way related to that. However all that might be, use whatever ECM part # is listed for 89 V8. If the 7730 isn't for 89 V8 then don't worry about it. Doesn't matter that you can only get one for 305; everything the ECM has to do is identical, just, some of the tuning details like fuel and timing curves are different.

Also thanks for everyone’s input. Yesterday I was able to obtain the 1989 factory service manual and followed the diag and it led to failed ecm. The cel does not come on with key on engine off but following the diag showed the light works. Also obd 1 scanner will not read the ecm. I also verified the wiring and connectors from diag connector to ecm.

I was able to find a new reman ecm (cardone 77165) locally. After installing my prom/cal pack and hooking up the ecm to the car during key on the ses light for a brief second and goes out. The ses light does not stay on till the engine started. I started to investigate the prom/cal pack #'s and they do not match up to a 1989 vehicle. So I now believe it has the wrong one. Now I am trying to find a correct prom/cal pack for this problem.

Re: Ecm needed for 1989 Formula 350 (5.7) Auto trans
I bought the car about 2 months ago. It starts, runs and drives but the SES light problem has not worked from the start plus snap on scan tool will not communicate with ecm. When I pulled the prom/cal pack from ecm there is no silver tag under the blue cover. But a hand written paper tag fell out. I took a picture of paper tag and proms and will attach to this post.

Here is a list, not all are covered, any of these will work or I can put together a aujm or even uv erase yours and burn a new tune on it.
https://www.3rdgenformula.com/89/promcodes.htm
some of the differences is superseded for slight running issues, and some are rear gear specific to help pass emissions but any will work and pass emissions if everything else is good.

*smh*
Sounds like there wasn't anything wrong with your old ECM; rather, looks like someone plugged your PROM in backwards or some such somewhere along the line, and it let the magic smoke escape. There's magic smoke residue kinda everywhere on that thing.
Looks like you need to find one, or have someone with the right 80s gear, burn you a new one.

If possible I rather have one to plug in and ready to go with stock settings/program. The APYU one looks good if you can make it work for my ecm. Let me know if possible and cost/how to purchase.
