Ive got a lot of photos i didn't post of the build. Didn't want to clutter it up. But if there is any questions by all means i can see if i have a photo or explain how i did it or how id do it again. Right now doing all new brakes so its on jack stands again currently.
ill have to look at adding an album soon.
Thanks again.

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
the ugliest wheels you can have on a third gen are those feather 20 slot 15" pontiac wheels, god almighty they are ugly as sin.
i have a set of original 16" high tech turbo wheels but they are never on the car, they are not what i really like.anything 18" or smaller looks great
on a third gen,ill be the first to admit i dont like the "donk" look AT ALL.............

Thanks! I wouldn't doubt if they come from the same manufacturer. The rear backspacing is 5.25 and the fronts are 4.5. The fronts rub on the inside when turning sharp.

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
Hi Everyone:
Okay, I have read so many of the different forums on this and still am not sure I have made the right choice. I have a 1989 IROC Convertible. I have replaced all the springs and shocks. Previously I was running 20x8 with 245/35/20 on all four corners. These (I believe) have '0' offset. They are the the IROC Replica Set. After reading a number of different boards here including: (max wheel / tire sizes for third gens, Wheel offset/size? HELP!!!!) and a number of other threads referred to in these two threads.
I made a choice to get a set of, US Mags U116 Hustler Wheels. 5x4.75
These are staggered with:
Front: 20x8 with a '0' offset, running 245/35/20 tires.
Rears 20x9.5 with a '0' offset, running 275/30/20 tires.
I have a stock length 9" rear end built by, Quick Performance, which has been measured by us as the same length as the stock unit. It comes with the following:
QP GM 1982-1992 F Body 9 Inch Housing & Moser Axles
Ford 9 Inch Rear Explorer Disc Brake Kit
Ford 9" Yukon Aluminum Alloy Through Bolt Complete Center section / Third Member
The mechanic that is putting the rear axle assembly in swears these back tires/wheels are not going to fit. I measured the back wheel at 10.85" across. They will be 26 ¹⁄₂" tall.
With everything I read, (and maybe didn't understand well enough), I thought these would fit just fine.
What I would like is some collective input from those of you that are far more experienced with 3rd gens than I am. If I have screwed up, do we have any possible fixes, or do I have to just turn around and eat these rear tires?
Thanks,
Donn

I feel conflicted between my desire to help you and being guilty of aiding 20" wheels on a 3rd gen. I just don't know what to do.

I like that you have a sense of humor.
I think the wheels might stick out a bit. Maybe best case scenario is flush with the fender. You'll definitely have to keep the ride height high enough to stay off the tire.

You have to have a sense of humor. Life is short. Thank you for your thoughts. I imagine it's the fact I have a '0' offset. The stock only came with a +16 if I read correctly. If you are correct, I am going to have to come up with a solution.

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
If the wheels are still returnable (unmounted),
* Put a plumb-bob on the fender and measure distance to where the wheel face meets the brake rotor.
* Then measure the width of the wheel and the backspace. The difference between those numbers is the wheel front spacing from mounting pad out toward fender.
* Compare to the plumb-bob measurement and decide what you want to do.
If the wheels aren't returnable then mount 'er up and see what ya get.

@bluegrassz:
That is the $64,000 question. I am waiting for the BMR torque arm to get here, which should be today. Once that gets here, the mechanic is going to install the new rear end. Once that's done, I'll know a lot more conclusively what I am dealing with. I will post pics as soon as I get them.

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
Thanks, that is just what I was looking for.
I had thought about running a square setup with 18x9.5 both front and back.
Any chance the rear would fit on the front? Tire may be too tall, but I wonder how the offset would look.
Also would depend on the brake setup.
If I go with the US Mag Ramblers, our cars will look very similar.

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
While I have yet to see mine mounted, my mechanic called me up this morning all pissed off that these wheels absolutely aren't going to work. He said that they rub on 3 points on the inner fender well and will stick out below the fender lip. I went and got a set of 15" from the local junk yard and took the offending large tires away. I'll deal with it after he gets the new rear end put in.
I will keep you all in the loop, (as much as you want to be)

Where did you buy those? I've tried to hunt down those wheels before and the only place I could find them in the US is Mecham Designs who after 2 years still has never answered the damn phone.

So you went direct to them and did not buy from a dealer in the USA?

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
I did get them from a Dealer in Phoenix, but he does not carry the line anymore. In fact, last I checked, you can only get them globally directly from the manufacturer. They are expensive, but not any more than other 3 piecers, the advantage is they are pretty easy to get odd offsets, they are all custom made to fit so if you have a tight spot, you can maximize....

Re: BEST looking 3rd gen firebird & camaro rims
Thank you.
The Aussies know how to make a good looking 5 spoke wheel. Forgeline, Fikse, and Bogart don't have anything that looks that good. I found Simmons 2 years ago and thought to myself, that's the wheel I'm getting! I've never gotten serious about buying new wheels yet, but that day might not be too far off.

Threw these stock T/A ones on mine. Painted them gold they were originally black. Also ran the opposite offset. Will be getting chunkier tires and drop soon.
